Langshan Thread!!! Welcome to 2012! - Page 5

Let me see if I can illustrate what I'm talking about...

Here's Clyde last year:

See how it's a constant shape? The U-shape is intact all the way along the back? See how there's no "break" in the back that defines the back against the tail?

Then there's another bird that I'm not too fond of...he's much younger, but it shows the difference fairly well:

See how his tail "breaks" the line of his back? He's not even a year old yet...so I'm letting him grow out to see how he'll look.  I believe I like his younger brother better..even though the brother doesn't have a tail yet.

The one in the back has tighter feathering of the wings.  The one in the back still has the "break" where the tail meets the back, but it's not as severe as the one up front.  The comb, at least to me, is not of huge consequence.  I prefer the body aspects than focusing on the comb.  Separation is always a good thing in combs, but without a good body, a comb is just a head band on a bad hair day.

I can see the "break" in the pics of your birds well, but I can't see it as well as in the pic with the McMurray birds. It just takes that experienced eye to see it!

I should also read up on the standard too, to see what's most important.

It could be the angle of the picture I guess, but the front bird has the break, the back bird has a "slight" one but not nearly as prominent as the front one.  They are both gorgeous...so please don't think I'm knocking them!

See the back of the front bird of the other photos? You can see a U-shape then all of a sudden it seems the tail goes up.  Again, it could be the angle of the camera...

Sorry, I love looking at Langshans...I would like to get whites at some point as well...but my white birds usually turn yellow because I "refuse" to keep them inside.  WHEN I get my "dream place" the "white" pens will have shade overtop to help keep them white.

My one white is still white from being confined all winter. We'll see what happens now that she's free to roam! It's also only March and the sun isn't that strong yet.

I got my eggs from Buck Creek. I think hers came from Superior Farms.

They were all over today, so excited to be out and about I didn't get any pics. I did notice what seems to be that "break" on the black hen, but not on the white. I did notice that unlike my other heavy breed girls they can fly! The white decided she wanted to know what was on the other side of that 5 foot fence.

And just WHERE are those photos kees?! big_smile

I had two chicks hatch from the last run of eggs.  I blame the incubator for the epic failure.  I've switched back to a still-air and I hope this will be better than that gawd-awful forced air.

I'll upload some photos soon.

The largest rooster I have right now has finally hit his limit.  He is now almost 3 years old and about 33".  I am 5'11" and he hits my knees.  I can hardly hold him, but it's not from him struggling...his legs simply hang down far enough to grab my belt and "hold" himself up.  As for weight, I'm afraid he's a bit on the heavy side.  10 lbs. last I checked, but I do need to reweigh.  The standard calls for 9.5 but I have a feeling he's well past that weight.  Females are generally around the 8 lbs. range.  Females are half the size of the males, but most is from the large tail feathers making them look larger than the females.  They successfully mate, so they're not too much difference in size.
