The praise was very thoughtful, the advice was good, and the suggestions were exactly what I was asking to hear

That was very well done.
I worked with special needs children a few years back. I was a teachers aide. We used sign to teach the children to do a lot of things one was to help them read. Giving them another visual to use if getting stuck on a word. It also helped some of the children talk better and more.If that makes any sense. My nephew is hard of hearing, to bad his parents aren't more open minded, because I know he would be less frustrated if he learned to sign.
I taught my son a few words before he could talk and believe me we had far less temper tantrums!
I never took classes to sign, but kinda learned as I needed to.
Talk with a speech pathologists they have a wealth of knowledge and would be able to help you decide what path to take. The one we worked with help us set up how we taught the kids.
I would love to get back into working with the special needs class, when I go back to work, but being a teachers aide has changed a lot since I left, so I have some brushing up to do and some courses to take!
Keep up the good work, you seem like a natural!

Both children in our household are learning ASL. My son is three, and LOVES the Signing Time series of videos. They're his favourite movies!

Our housemates have a little girl who just turned 1 a couple of weeks ago, and she learned some of the first, all-important signs (like EAT!) well before she started talking. Right now, she seems to learn a new word and sign simultaneously. It's so cool! A few weeks ago she looked at her blue plastic ball, looked up at her daddy and said "BAAAALL!" and signed "ball" perfectly along with it. That was the first time she'd used sign or word.
