Fellow Texans, how do you feel about....

Cedar???

While in general I'm against extinctions, I feel that every cedar tree in the state should have a close encounter with a flame thrower. Them little warbler birds can find a new sort of tree to nest in, if not; there are other little birds around.

For those of you who do not live in Texas, cedar trees produce vast amounts of toxic pollen. It is seventy degrees, sunny and lovely outside, but every time I go out my eyes burn, my nose runs and I feel awful.

Daggummed trees need to be whiped out.

I'm transplanted in Texas. I have terrible allergies but since moving here, not so much. I don't have any Cedar on my property or nearby, so I don't have any problems. But I've heard from other Texans that they should be erradicated because they also suck up a lot of water and cause problems for ranchers around their livestock's water holes. They chop down every cedar in the vacinity of their water holes.

Are the cedars a non native species? We have cedars all around here but they aren't a problem up in the wet, damp, always raining PNW. You guys must have some bad trees!

Let's erradicate dog's for biting folks, bees for stinging folks, and water for drowning folks, too!

I am a Texan who was transplanted out of Texas.
Of all things I have a Cedar Tree in my front lawn here in Wisconsin.
I love them. I think they smell nice, and it reminds me of home.
That has always been one of the things I loved about the hill country - all the Cedar Trees.
I am not one who suffers from allergies though.

There is a certain species of cedar tree that is invasive here, as are yaupon. If I never saw another yaupon bush in my life, it would be too soon. I have actively lead a crusade to kill every last living leaf of yaupon on my property. The only single thriving survivor is a bush my husband said should stay as ornamental shrubbery, because it was free. It's days are numbered. Don't get me wrong, though...I'm an active gardener and I'm all for preserving native species in their natural habitat, but when the balance of things gets out of kilter and the more aggressive species take over, I'm all for population control.

I don't mind cedars myself, since I think they are lovely trees when kept properly, but I have a bad allergy of them and anything connected to the evergreen/pine family. My thoughts are that they are nice as long as they are in someone else's yard. We had several big ones in our yard when I was growing up, and they have a tendency to block out the light and kill anything living under them, plus throwing down tons of tiny, prickly needles.

What kind of cedar?

Eastern red cedar is the aromatic kind use for closets and natural moth repellents. I love the scent of opened cedar chest!

Cedars in Texas are actually Ashe and mountain juniper. They are a native species that has become invasive in some areas. They are water hogs. In many places, cedar erradication will allow dry springs to flow again. The are also the sole nesting habitat for an endangered bird species.

I just hate that the won't allow me to enjoy what I consider the best part of Texas weather, the lovely, sunny warm winter days. Danged trees have me looking like the:

Stupid cedar fever, stupid boy trees. I'll be willing to let the girl trees live, just flame throw the boy trees.

Pollen counts are over 5000 today, over about 300 is considered high.
