Can a chicken lay more than one egg a day?

It has happened to me two or three times now... one day my duck will be disturbed by some event and will not lay. The next she will lay two. Sometimes one of them will be deformed in that case. Usually flattened on one side - probably because of the presence of the unlaid egg.

thanks for this thread. I have 5 hens and collected 5 eggs yesterday evening. I went out today and there were 8 eggs in the nest. I read the same stuff you guys have that it takes about 1 day to produce an egg so I was confused. Glad to know it can happen

yes! I have gotten 13 eggs from my 12 hens a couple of times. Is that like having fraternal twins? Ha!!!!

My hens lay more than one a day. One hen used to lay huge double yolk eggs but now all the eggs are normal size but there is an extra egg being layers nearly every day. These are young hens

This has also happened with my Chickens twice now that I know if in the last couple weeks. They are young hens just started laying in August, Red and black sex link. I was just wondering about this today.

I moved two Australorp hens to a different chicken house where I had a lonesome roo (I butchered seven of his buddies last week and kept him, the biggest and best-looking). No eggs for the first two days (and these were hens that lay an egg almost every day), which I attributed to the stress of being moved. There were no eggs last night either in the boxes or on the ground when I went to close the chickenhouse door (there are predators around--and this morning I found and killed an opossum in a trap close to another chickenhouse). This morning when I went there early to let them out I found the empty membrane of a shell-less egg on the ground. Probably the contents had been eaten, as the membrane was open at one end. I went back there at 9:20 a.m. and found three complete eggs on the ground, in a depression that the hen or hens had dug in the dirt. I am quite sure they were not there last night and that the roo did not lay one. So there were four eggs laid in there since last night--though one was "defective." Go figure!

We have 10 hens and my Son (11) gets the eggs.
Last night I put the girls to sleep and the henhouse was clear of eggs.
Yesterday there were only 2 eggs. Today there were.................15!!!
OMG! Had to take 2 cartons out there to scoop them up.
This isn't the first time. Last time I yelled at my Son for not picking up all the eggs. LOL I own him an apology. These girls are in HIGH production.
I double check each night to make sure there aren't anymore eggs when I lock them up for the night. Last time there were 13 eggs when this happened. I thought my Son had just left them in from the previous night and I'd missed them. I guess I should pay more attention when there is a LOT of egg song happening. Our Olive egger gave us a double yolker + one to grow on today. Ouch that must have hurt!
