How can I tell the difference from between a young hen and a rooster

"The little buggers"??
Those are animals - as in, LIVE beings.. with brains, and a nervous system, who can FEEL when you hurt them..
if "the little buggers" squaked and struggled, I'm guessing they don't really like you holding them up side down by their legs all that much!!!
I hate people so much sometimes for thinking, 'just because we can do whatever we want then we should.'
How 'bout I hold YOU by legs, just 'cause I can.. Just 'cause I feel like it. See if it bothers you.
as a human you have allot of responsibility here, BECAUSE you can do whatever you want, you can choose to be good, and to guard helpless "little buggers".
What condescending thinking it is, to refer to other living creatures as you just did.
Instead of abusing those poor things, who were already born to a difficult life, you can be freakin'
patient and see with time.
Makes me so sad to think this is in any way funny to anyone.

I have someone looking to get rid of a couple chickens but she is not sure if they are hens or roosters. They were born in January so they are 3-4 months old. I am new to raising chickens so all I want right now is hens. Anyone know how to tell the difference at that age? Please foegive my ignorance and thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

Please post pictures we will help you.

Judy and Bella thanks for tryiny to help.

I hope none of the rest of you thought you were helpful, shame on you, the original poster wanted help not ridicule......

LOL...did anyone notice this thread js 7 years old!

I caught my old post and ment to say comb and not crop...sorry for the 7 year old confusion....and I agree to simply wait and see what you have.....peace...bigz

lol. this is great. I remember my mother doing this to me when I was pregnant with my son back in the 80's. Great memory.

I was told to hold the little buggers by the legs, and if they squaked and struggled for more than a few minutes, they were cocks, if they went backwards and looked at me they were hens.

If its true, all my little fuzzies are hens.

I've just tried this on my new chickies and they both DID act differently. Interesting fact, thanks for the info. Hope it works on mine!!

Thanks again,
Natalie.
