There are shows, and then there are shows... - Page 18

Lets remember it is one judges opion on that one day, in a week that same judge might place them differently. Just because a bird doesn't place well at one show(might be to young, or just not in the best condition that day) it could place high another day when it has matured or is in better condition.

Since there is a APA standard tho....shouldn't the results, if it's an APA sanctioned show, be basically the same if the judges go by the standard?  Isn't that what they're supposed to judge each individual bird by...not their own personal likes or dislikes?

If you want house chickens and ducks in diapers then this is the forum for you.
I've got 50+ years of poultry experience, but this 'poultry' forum isn't for me anymore.
If you're going to complain about farmers, don't do it with a full belly or a mouthful.

That is true, But Birds change and  mature, and can be in better condition from show to show. Which can change their placings. We showed horses for year, and personal tastes, like and dislike do  influence a judges opion.

I agree about that.  I'm just saying the baseline for what the judge is looking for shouldn't differ from one show to the next.

This was an interesting topic that I was watching closely.  Why bash someone who is just giving an opinion?

And what was that about pink-bodied, naked-neck Langshans?  Seriously..out of all the breeds...a Langshan?

Because We live in a hateful mean society where expectations and goals are too lofty for most. That is why suicide rates are so high in this country . Out of 1500 birds only one can be first. being nasty to the rest isnt necessary. My opionin is just enjoy the win and everybody will celebrate with you. there is only one 1st place and no one remembers second place . Takes the fun and sportsmanship right out of it too me. Kids dont learn from someone beating them for being second or third instead of encouraging them to do better. offer advise instead of venomous critisizm. Maybe try saying this person has some really good birds you might be interested in or this person really wins big and if you are real serous they can set you up with some birds that will do well for you. seeing is beleiving . You can catch a lot more things with sugar than you can vinegar. Otherwise I wouldnt worry about what they are doing.

There is a family in our area who has hamburgs that not only win at the county fairs , they also win at sanctioned shows even won at the big harrisburg poultry and they are as humble about it as they can be, in fact they dont do the internet cause too many snotts they said who assume too much. Didnt want thier kids to get discouraged when they were working so hard and yep, they went through thier trials to build up the flock they have now that is tops. they lost a lot on thier way to winning and wanted to keep it positive , didnt need snotts trying destroy an interest thier kids have.

I have seen people who have birds who are points wise at APA sanctioned shows are no 1 be a nice and as encouraging to somone new as they can be , and then I have seen snots who assume they shine in the east and set in the west who just turn people off to the whole process..

Just like american Idol, some people think they can sing, and some people can sing. being snotty only makes you look bad not the person who lost. They will eventually find out that they cant sing. being a nasty is tacky and takes the focus off maybe letting that person take lessons and learn to be better, So what if they think they are good, let them have a little self esteem...thou singing you cant change much, you can always swop out a chicken for a better chicken. couldnt think of a better analogy.

Many of our county fairs are APA sanctioned and points to be had for many breeds. They use the venue to attract more interested people and have you ever bought insurance for a show? Plus the expence of flying a great judge to it from out of atate? Cha ching.... with lawsuits the way they are it is very expensive , easier to fall under the fair insurance. somone can fall on thier can at your show or some kid can put thier eye ball too close to a rooster cage.  trust me kids love chickens and they climb right under and over ropes put up to keep them back, turn your back for a second and woops.

Here! Here! If you are not interested in some ones birds, Don't buy from them! We all know everyone has an opinion but that doesnt make it right foreveryone. There is enough hatred and cruelty in the world. Does it have to invade our poultry world to? This is suppose to be about fun and family not turn into a feeding frenzy...

Maybe its just me, but there is a way to say things that is a lot more effective.

I met a woman years ago I knew she had chickens but never knew she had anything to do with showing..she like everybody had learning curves and bad birds along the way.. One day she had me come in to pick up some horse items she was getting rid of, we walked into her chicken trophy room. I couldnt beleive what she had won over the years BOBs , Best softfeather APA this that and the other thing...I said Lordy I never knew you did all of this...She was so humble about the whole ordeal like it was no big deal, that was how I got started, she helped me find show people who bred birds I liked. She was always focused. She moved to minn cause her husband is neurologist and offered a full partnership out there, I miss her . She wasnt a bummer who was self rightious. If she was I never would have gotten into it.

This was/is a poultry site that has turned into a social forum that often times has very little to do with poultry.

I agree with if you don't like someones birds, you don't have to buy them......does that mean we shouldn't say anything about something we disagree with or find very misleading?

No one here is complaining about your birds..I think it is about some of the comments you have made.   You came on the forum and made a comment about people thinking they have SQ birds when they dont and you also made a comment about the judges not knowing what they were doing .  We all curiously went  to your website and took a look at your birds that you are advertising as SQ I guess everyone has their own view of SQ.. just like the judges will sometimes award BB to a bird that placed 3rd at the last show.

I just went to that website, and I agree with Mrs. Turbo. There must be 200 different views of "SQ". lol

not only do judges vary on personal preference but there is also room for interpretation when it comes to the SOP.  I imagine it is an incredibly difficult job to judge so many birds in the allotted time.  When there is a row of 15 black rosecomb pullets, 8 of which are from the same breeder and may look extremely similar, difficult becomes impossibility.  The same results flat out cannot be replicated at the next show... add other factors like conditioning and a bird aging (rosecombs tend to peak at a year or two so from Spring to Fall, you may have a completely different bird) and it's just too many variables to make showing as cut and dry as some think it should be.
