Are all Roosters mean??

We are kind of new to chickens and were thinking about getting a rooster so we could have fertile eggs to hatch our own chicks. Is it by personality or breed or is it how much time you spend with him.? Thank you in advance and dealing with all of my questions cause i am not experienced with too many roosters.
 
ALL ROOSTERS feel the need to protect the flock and fight for the top position. Some feel more strongly than others though.

The real trick is to make sure that the rooster knows that you are above him in the pecking order, and also not a threat to his flock. You don't make friends with a rooster, more of a truce.

Out of about 15-20 roosters I have had, only 1 has been aggressive. It all depends on the individual chicken

We have a Light Brahma and he is great! Very gentle when you catch him. When he first started to get to sexual maturity, I worried because of all the stories I had heard about roosters. But all he did was watch me very closely if I held one of his hens and make some noise if they started flapping and making noise. One time he rushed me when I ambushed a hen and she squacked like I was killing her. But he stopped and just watched me. I make a point of catching him and tote him around with me every now and then too.

We also had a Polish rooster who we got rid of because he crowed ALL THE TIME! He was not the Dominate roo but he was a little more aggressive when we would handle the hens. Not mean or anything, but def more aggressive toward us.

Anyway, I really recommend the Light Brahmas.
 
All of my Buff Orp roo's were mean. I have 4 Roo's now and only one is nasty. He will be going to freezer soon. (Spitzhauben) My Jersey, EE and Fav. roos are very managable.

I agree though, it is up to that rooster how he is gonna act. I have one OEGB who runs from you but once caught is sweet. My lil dude pecker Dutch mix is sweet and will come right up to me! He lets me pet him down his back then he fluffs for me, think he has a crush on me. And my ameraucana is nice but i can't hold him! Just to big and strong
 
i have heard RIR roosters can be (not always) very aggressive. My husband's family had one when he was a kid and it would chase them all over the yard and peck at them.

We have a small OEGB mixed bantam. We have had him since he was about 5 weeks old. He used to sit on our shoulders. He is now full grown, but still very sweet. He won't sit on our shoulders anymore (that was kid stuff!), but he protects the hens and has only bitten us when we go in the coop at night and he thinks something is attacking his hens!

Roosters can be excellent for a flock. He is the first one out in the morning and the last one in at night. if a hen is straggling while free ranging, he'll make sure she comes back to the flock.

I would definitely recommend one.

I also hear that Salmon Faverolles roosters are particularly calm and docile. (not to mention gorgeous!)
