Best dog breed around chickens? UPDATE post #117 Thanks all!

Saw an earlier forum that recommended doxies for chickens. My 12 year old Doxie never bothered my chickens or ducks for the first several months we had them last summer. Then suddenly he started picking them off occasionally. It took several losses before I figured out it was him. We had a couple cats we rehomed thinking it was them killing. After our Doxie attacked our new rooster we decided that when the chickens are out, the dog is tied up- no matter if we're home or not. He just can't seem to help himself. I feel at 12 years old our Doxie deserves to stay at our house until he dies. Seem it would be pretty stressful to rehome him at this stage of the game. Not saying all doxies would attack birds but sure can't trust ours!

I have a 55kg Maremma X golden retriever desexed male. He is fabulous with chickens. He has had baby chicks perching on his legs. He was six months old when we got him and hadn't been around chooks before. Also brought a baby goat home who cuddled up with dog. He doesn't chase horses cows etc, he actually licks the cattle. He will chase chooks away from his food but in 5 years he hasn't harmed a single feather. Speak to Pyrenees or Mareema reputable breeders as they will know individual pups temperament and many of these dogs are born and raised with chooks. They also prefer cooked meat mine won't eat raw meat. Best farm dog ever and no fox attack since his arrival.
