Java Thread

Sorry for this picture but this is the only one I have. (when I submit I lose the picture....sorry) I have 60 day old Black Java's. Most of them have red combs and wattles, but a couple of them have a different color like a cream color. Any one knows what this would mean?
Are you sure it's an actual different color and not just paleness of the comb and wattles?

I have never heard of anyone's Javas having their combs and wattles be truly a cream or white color. Earlobes are a different story. Positive enamel white in the earlobe of Java is a disqualification at a show and these birds should not be bred. If they by some chance do come up with white comb and wattles, then they also would be disqualified and should not be bred.

Paleness could be that they may have worms/illness or they could be late bloomers and just have not caught up to the rest in maturity.

If it is truly a color difference and not simply paleness, I would question the purity of the bloodline and wonder if they had been crossed with another breed.

60 day old Javas are still immature. Some of my Black Javas do not develop comb color until they are several months old. One year I had a 4-5 month old bird with no comb development. I was putting it in with the pullets when he started to crow. Oops. Took his comb another few weeks to begin developing.

As bnjrob said, if it is truly a color difference and not paleness you have a problem. At 60 days I would assume it is paleness, not a color difference. But it is something to keep an eye on over time.

That's so funny! I have my first Javas, and I'm surprised at how quiet they are. Well, all my other chicks have been Dorkings and mongrels. Lots of verbalizations and whining and moaning. The Javas just seem so happy all the time!

Turns out I'd accidentally been sent a different breed, they are NOT mottled Java, but Ancona!!! No wonder so vocal and flighty! Not Java!

We decided to try breeding Javas for next year because they are endangered and an important foundation breed in American history:yiipchick. The mottled chicks that I bought are over a month now and they are so full of life! We have Rhode Island Red Hens that we born at the same time to compare how they really compare to one of the breeds that replaced them.

Both breeds have been very healthy and hardy. The main difference I have noticed so far is the Javas ability to find garden worms. Without fail they are fearless when hunting worms. They will even beat the top hens and roosters to any worms and run off with the prize.

They also seem to be much more independent and curious. Most of them are not shy. For three days a little 1.5 month old Java decided she wanted to live with my three year old laying hens in their coop instead of with the teenagers. She ventured back when she was ready. It was super funny to watch her squeeze in to steal their treats.

I would like to post updates and pictures of how they act when they are older. All the photos attached are the birds at 1 month old.

I worked with Privett Hatchery in New Mexico for the chicks. We had to buy at least 25 and it was about a month wait. I have had mixed luck with Privett but the Java were by far the best birds I have ordered from them. Super Alert and ready to jump out of the box and explore! If you don't need 25 I still recommend buying 25 and selling some to pay for the costs. When people learned that the Javas are hardy critically endangered birds they will be interested in having some. We sold 8 birds at a month old in less than a week and people still ask when we will have more. Yay Javas! !:jumpy

I am just starting to raise these beautiful birds. Yes they can be a little flighty, my hen is like that. And my rooster is quite the attacker when he is with the girls. I only have two of these birds so if you have any you'd like to get rid of, contact me. I live in Oregon. I am also getting ready to start showing them. Here is my rooster and hen.
