I don’t know, I can only see two hens!...:hmm
Their feathers are nice and thick now and the coop stays nice and cozy with lows of 50° overnight. We are still trying to figure out this heading back upstairs at sundown, thing, though. Only two of them go up to roost at sundown, (guess which ones) the rest fall asleep piled up on the floor of the run and I have to pick them up fast asleep to put up in the coop.

Yeah, when I let my juveniles out of the introduction coop and out with my adult chickens I had to catch them all (15) every night for nearly a week before they all decided the main coop was home.
I closed the intro coop during the day and did not open it until after dark to limit their options. Then I let the recalcitrant ones go to roost in the intro coop. It made catching them a cinch.
But they all go to bed in the main coop now though the juveniles make an Awful racket in the morning when they know I’m coming to let them out. It sounds likes barroom brawl in there!
MyJavas meander our in the morning but the leghorns explode out, as do the Easter eggers.
But I will say the intro of the15 juveniles to my adult flock went very smoothly and without fighting or injury.

I have had chickens for a long time but am new to chicken breeding. I have 2 roos and 7 hens age 14 months. The hens lay well and are carried around by my 6 year old. One rooster is aggressive the other is normally nice but not trusted with the kiddos. My kids want to show in 4H so interested in breeding toward the standard. My chicks were purchased from Strombergs. All but 2 hens have spurs. 3 of 7 hens are of the appropriate weight. These are mottled. Should I start over with new breeding birds. Ifso where do I get them? Also I live 3.5 hours from Garfield farm museum. Should\Can I just go get a nice black roo. To help fix the problem in the next generation? If so which color of colors will I get?

I am new to chickens also and I do have mottled Javas. Not sure I understand your question. Is your concern that 4 of your hens are not up to weight standard? I must learn about SOP on spurs of Mottled Java hens. Hencam.com says: All chickens have buds on their legs from which spurs can grow. In most hens they remain latent, but spurs are not that unusual in the females of Mediterranean breeds.

My overall concern is that they seem to poor specimens of the breed. The weight issue can be fixed. The spur issue is it greater concern. I cannot find his it is controlled genetically. Dominate? Recessive? Co-dominate?
i have looked into breeding with some better black Java that are likely available semi locally. My first generation would be all black ( I think) , but mottled should hatch in the second generation. I am trying to decide how to most quickly improve our flock given the genetics I have versus those I can get. Ideally I could find someone in the Midwest with a quality breeding trio fro sale. ....but I have not found any yet.

Spurs on the hens are a defect, not a disqualification, so in an APA show, they'd get marked down a little but that is not the end of the world. It's getting increasingly difficult to get Javas, especially now that the main person who kept them alive for the last half a century or so, downsized his breeding due to age. We've been breeding Javas for six years now and it is a slow process to improve them because Javas were just neglected for so long. No matter whether you breed what you have or go get a Black from Garfield to add into the mix, it's going to take time to improve things. If you're looking for quick show winners for your kids, you should go find a show-winning APA breeder and buy from them. And that most likely means that you'll need to switch to a different breed, as I don't know many folks who are showing Javas and winning with them, much less selling them anymore.

Lo
A couple pictures of my Mottled Java chicks. I am very happy to be getting back into working with the Mottled Javas after a 15 year absence of having any. :)

I love them!

Hi! I may have an opportunity to get a few Java eggs this spring, and was wondering if anyone could tell me their experiences with them? (Temperament, Eggs, weather, flightiness etc). Thanks!
