Hawaii. Hatching Eggs anyone?

You're in Kamuela???  I wish we had a drooling emoticon........ I wanna live in Kamuela again!   all I've got now is a cat by that name trying to get me away from the computer (just not the same)

I was actually thinking about that this afternoon -- what I would have to do to move back there -- sell the horses, get rid of the chickens, downsize to nothing, learn to live with literally no money....... someday........

edited to add: it doesn't help that your name is Lisa -- it was my friend Lisa who got me started thinking about it today when she sent an email reminding all her friends that she's moving back to Honolulu tomorrow.  (I hate her.)

ive only been to maui once...it was AWSOME!!!! u r sooooo lucky!

Eggs  do not fly good the change in pressure is very hard on them.  also in flight sudden and large temperature swings also degrade the egg.

so even if you find a shipper your rate may be very low

lots of ducks here  -- LOL  -- but I don't know anyone who has eggs ... check on craigslist or ask at the humane society, they might know

may try my hand at hatching, as one of the wild chickens who live on the property, seems to have abandoned her nest and the 18 eggs in it ... nobody on the nest for at least a week (since I found it) ... 4 of the 18 definitely bad ...

another hen hid so well I never found her nest, now have 9 little peeps running after mama ... 4 blond, 5 who seem to have developed auburn streaks in their black-and-brown

(all of them are sprouting black-and-white barred wing feathers)

third hen seems to be intermittently sitting on nest with about 16 eggs in it

my tenant who usually lives in this house says that is TOO MANY baby chickens and she doesn't want wild ones anyway, she wants PET chickens

oh well ...  already have homes for any excess ... one gal wants cockerels and roosters and old hens, one guy wants layers ...

Could it be a state-related issue that keeps them from bringing in ducks?  I know Hawaii doesn't want to import problems from the mainland -- maybe there's a fear that ducks will leave home and establish feral flocks that interfere with the native birds.

just ran across your post.  I live in Kekaha on the westide of Kauai.  It has been hit or miss with shipping eggs to Hawaii.  You are supposed to get some kind of certificate to ship eggs to Hawaii.  I personally have never gotten one.  I have shipped eggs and they have gotten here, and I also have had some blocked and sent back to the shipper.  It takes a rough ride getting over here to Hawaii and I have never gotten over a 50% hatch on shipped eggs, but have good hatch rates with my personal eggs.  All of the eggs I've shipped have been from private sellers that I found on the BYC buy/trade forum here and a couple on ebay.  I try and stick to the west coast and southwest as it doesn't take as long shipping.  And make sure they individually wrap each egg.  Have them sent on Monday and they normally make it here by Thursday if it is coming from the west coast.    Just last month I had 2 sets of eggs coming from different sellers.  One made it no problem, the other got refused and sent back to the seller.
I would send away and get the breeds you are looking for and just keep a rooster around to have a supply of healthy fertalized eggs you can hatch anytime.  I have a mix of RIR, austrolorps and barred rocks. I don't have a roo right now but just hatched some more RIR and barred rocks and am going to keep a RIR roo so I can make sex link chicks with the RIR and BR hen.  The ones that got sent back were Delawares that I also wanted for sex link chicks.
If you want I can send you the email of people that I've had luck shipping eggs over here, but you are taking your chances. 
You an also ask the local feed stores to bring in day old chicks and just make a deal with them to get a special breed and you will take half of them.  My store buys chicks from both Ideal and Cackle hatchery.  Most of the local feed stores bring in RIR, production reds and red or black sex links in the spring so keep an eye out for them or go in and and put your name on a list.  Also I know the local 4H normally sell chicks at the county fair.  Ours here always sell RIR and cornish chicks as fund raiser, that is how I got started many years ago.
