So hens dont have these hard feathers? If thats so I have all roosters.... hide

They all have wing feathers. The wings fill in first, then the rest of the body slowly follows to fill in with adult plumage and lose the chick down. Just like a regular feathered breed, but with the fluff. smile

A chick of mine - 7 weeks old - you can see the wing feathers on this young pullet

Note on my pullet you can see her wing feathers. This is what yours will look like as they get older. This girl is a good example of a good quality bird.

Thanks! That really helped! I thought if they had feathers they weren't good quality, shows what I know! Thanks again! I hope my partridge looks like yours!

I am a chicken fanatic!

    I love them all!

Along  with any animal!

I have stopped trying to post all my chickens on here because I have now come to the point where I have to many to post!!

Anyways, I have Serama eggs for sale. (Limited Availablility.)

The wings are different from the rest of the plumage, but they aren't "regular feathers" like other chickens. the young chick - they look pretty 'normal' but in a month or so they will shred out and be very 'tattered' and ratty looking almost. Silkies can't get any air under their wings at all, if you drop them they fall like a rock. You want a good silkie to hold their wings tight and horizontal to the body, a superb bird in show condition and fluffed out for competition you can barely see those flight tips at all.

My girl on the bottom picture her wings are loose in the picture. which makes them much more visible. but usually she kept them tighter and higher like they should be.

Hello Silkie folks, I'm a lurker, but also a new Silkie owner of MPC silkies, and a few paints that I just purchased off BYC. I'd like opinions on the color of this one particular chick... now almost 5 weeks old. "She" is supposed to be Blue, but I'm starting to wonder if I got lucky and got a Splash?? Any thoughts??

Looks more like a splash to me for sure...
If it weren't, it'd be more gray than a blue I'd imagine.

Thanks!! We just got into chickens, and just moved back to the USA about 2 months ago, so I was in a mad rush to find an assortment of silkie colors and MPC had the biggest selection IN STOCK.... (BEFORE I found BYC!!). After I got these first 8 from MPC, thats when I discovered the Splash and Paints and "Chicken Math" came over me and I found some paint chicks only a week younger than the 8 MPC chicks... so now we have 14 wink The only color I could not get right away was SPLASH.... and that is my FAVORITE of all silkie colors now that I've had plenty of time to admire!!!
These are "just pets" for me and my 4 yr old.... but I can certainly see it becoming more if we stay in the USA for any length of time!!
Here are pics of my paints..... 4 of the 6 paint chicks have lots of spots, but 2 don't have any black YET.... does it take time for spots to come in as they get older? They are about 3-4wks old here.

Yeah, they are just little fuzzballs still!
They will look different once they fill out.

I love your chicks and splash is my favorite color next to paint! big_smile  I don't have any paint yet, but I do understand that spots can come later. You have a great start on your chicken math!!
