Silkie thread! - Page 1436

Your hen is a MUCH nicer quality bird than the rooster you are showing pictures of.  I'd be a bit more picky about the rooster if I were you.  That hen of yours is super pretty!  I'd hold out for a much nicer roo.  :)  Beautiful girl you have!

Yay Melissa! They'll be hatching like popcorn all week for you...do you have three bators going? Can't wait to see all the babies together...

Artsyrobin...I am glad you were able to rescue him also...he looks like he will be good to his girls...

I was at a swap today. there were so many silkies and everyone i felt bad for. roosters went for $20 each for butcher (that surprised me) people would buy like 7 silkies at once and through them in boxes. i almost baught one but i was too late.

Hey all, sorry in but into this thread but had a few pictures of a Buff Silkie Cockerel and would like to get the different opinions about him. He obviously has some black smutt in his tail, but he is clear elswhere and has great wings. Im not expert on Silkies, and only recognize certain things that someone who "specializes" in this breed might not miss. These pics were taken in the 17th and he was hatched on 8-29. Looking for the good the bad and the ugly about this bird, although he will eventually be sold.

This pic of his feet were taken a few months back, but they give you an idea what they look like.

Again, any advice given is much appreciated. Thanks.

i always feel sorry for the birds at those sales- like my new guy- at least treat them right so they won't be more stressed... i hate the thought of silkies heading for slaughter

Noooooooo!!!! How sad sad.png
I don't sell to people I don't like or that will eat them.

What's the point of eating a fluffy tiny little 2 pound bantam?  It seems really sad, to me.  I didn't realize there were people that found the black skin on them attractive and wanted to eat them.  :(  I think I'd have to agree with not selling to anyone who had the intention of eating them or just didn't come across as a really good chicken keeper.  I see on Craigslist people wanting to buy more chickens because their dogs attacked and ate THEIR chickens... it's going to happen again, why would they want more if they aren't going to fix the problem and build a secure run.  Poor little fluffy butts.  sad.png  I went to a lot of trouble to be sure everyone is secure and safe, and it doesn't have to be that expensive to do it.  I can't imagine a breeder responding to their ad and knowingly sending their birds to slaughter to be eaten by dogs and ripped apart.  *shudder*  Well, sorry for the tangent!  ha!

Still crossing my fingers on fertile eggs, I've started collecting again.

Casey, the biggest fault I see with your guy are the toes on his left foot.

Does he have nails on the pinky toes?

some vets treat wry neck with prednisone  (sorry spelled wrong) among the usual advice for polyvisol infant vitamins (NO IRON) vit.e (from a capsule) etc.  There must be tons of info  if you search wry neck, or silky syndrome.
