Silkie thread! - Page 1479

My broody silkie didn't eat at all yesterday!  I know, because I set up her food exactly so, and then put sunflower seeds on top.  Those are her favorite and she'll eat those first.  None were touched and her water looked untouched.  So I don't think she even got up ONCE!  No poop from yesterday, either.  So just now, I had enough and took her outside in the sun for a bit and had her walk around, poop and then I put her in front of her food.  She ate and drank and then got back on her nest.  Geez... does anyone else have broodies with a Death Wish??!  These girls are crazy!!

Yes many broodies (not just silkies) will be that way. You have to keep an eye on them especially in warm weather. Cooler weather isn't so big a deal, but if you notice them losing too much weight/condition you have to get on them.  Broodies have been known to literally brood themselves to death.

Mine has been exactly the same way. I got her to eat by putting apple pieces and fresh squash right in front of her.

Freckle Face Farm  You rooster is very handsome !  Congratulations on the win !

Hawkeye95  I am glad that you had the good sense to wake the dazed Broody.  I will do the same when I have a broody.  Notice I said when.   gig.gif

But I might need to visit Twin Oaks Ranch if the two eggs in the incubator do not make it out of their shells.  fl.gif

Ho long does it take for a hen to get a full beard. This little hen, I named her Shortie, is already laying and doesn't have a full beard yet.ct birds 061.JPG

Not all Silkies have beards.  I personally like full beards. But watch and see if your hen's beard comes in fuller after a molt if not then what you see is what you get.

I know not all silkie have beards but the non bearded one's have no beards at all. Its just skin. i was wondering if she is a mixesd bred, like bearded cross non bearded.

She a pretty girl. My guess is that she could be the result of mixing bearded with non bearded. Are you able to ask about her parents ?

Her crest is not full either and that makes me think that she is pet quality but not show quality.  That is quoted from what I have read here. But I apologies for answering in the first place because I am not experienced enough to make comments. So then I would take it all back but it is to late.
