For what it's worth, I have a copy of the SOP in my lap, opened for another issue at a show this weekend.

And don't think just because a bird came from different states, it is not related.

Lots of people are shipping eggs everywhere, they could possibly be closely related!

Woohoo 12 Silkie eggs in the incubator as we speak! Can't wait for them to hatch as my first batch (using a different incubator or course) was horrible.

We have 6 eggs from the grey/silver silkies and 6 that are of unknown color!

Checking it with a judge...maybe my comment about silkie nomenclature not being any different was WRONG, WRONG, WRONG?  

Who's eggs did you get?  What kind of incubator are you using?

Thanks, that's good to know exactly what the points off will be.  Of course, that is if the judge even notices.  And yes, with all the shipping and people buying from the same breeders selling eggs, it would be easy to have related birds.  I do know who my birds have come from and am keeping track of everything.  I'm going to use a different breeder that is well known for their own line of birds this time.  Maybe the two mixed will bring better results.  I'm going to have to get bands and come up with a good system for keeping track of them.

 I designated green for "Go" so that as I look through offspring and find any birds that I am pretty darn sure won't be staying I slap a green zip on them, so when I'm ready to sell, I don't have to rummage through bird by bird, I already have my 'to go' birds marked. 

I am starting to keep records of all my birds now that I have 16 mature birds and a number of grow outs. I bought the bandettes for the adults and I bought a big tub on ebay of 1000 various colored zipties (4") for chicks and teenager identification (just to know what hatch they came from or if from my own birds what pen/breeders) this is allowing me to keep records of hatch-dates, worming, etc. also I designated green for "Go" so that as I look through offspring and find any birds that I am pretty darn sure won't be staying I slap a green zip on them, so when I'm ready to sell, I don't have to rummage through bird by bird, I already have my 'to go' birds marked. 

As soon as all chicks hatch and go in the brooder they get a ziptie anklet just tight enough to stay above the foot. (on lighter color chicks some use a sharpie to mark color on the heads until they start feathering in and then move to another form of ID. 

As my birds hit 3 months old they get a bandette and have run through all my initial obvious cuts, and will most likely stay until atleast 6 months old so I start to need an individual way to ID them, so they will get a bandette and go in the record book with their new bandette color and # and their basic info. 

I am still trying to work on exactly what all i want to keep record of and how to 'neatly' do it, but right now I have a bunch of stuff written down in a paper notepad, and am slowly putting it all down in the computer... LOL

Thank you for the great info on how you visibly separate out your chicks.  I've been brainstorming up an idea to tell what is mine, and what other's I'm hatching.. etc.  I've already come up with a form I drew up on Corel Draw and I have info like band #, breeder, hatch date, color, gender, parents and their band #'s, comment on toes and legs, etc...  If I think of more, I'm going to add it to the birds I keep.  I want to keep a sort of pedigree so I know who I'm breeding and what is resulting from that.  I've just started, so hopefully I come up with a form that will really work for the long run and I won't have to keep modifying it.  :)  I know there are online forms for this, but I am really the type to just keep a binder and do it that way.

 Wow! Your method is almost identical to mine! I even used Corel Draw! One of the things I added was whether they were vaulted or not because when the grow up you can't tell by looking. I also put as much parental history as I can find and start evaluating wings at about two weeks. Great fun for me.  I am using a toe punch and though the first punch was hard they didn't even peep! Also use colored bands. I like Jessys idea of the green band!
