Yeah, it's no fun when they die.

I tried to mentally prepare myself when the hens started sitting on the eggs! lol With 31 eggs, I was not expecting all of them to survive and/or hatch. I'm staying positive though! thumbsup.gif

My hatch rate was really good this month - I AM OVERRUN WITH CHICKS NOW!  I have had some really interesting looking chicks hatch this week.  My Calico chicks look the oddest with the silver and blue fluff - I am getting some darker partridge colors out of my buffs, so I am assuming that someone has partridge in their background.  I have a female buff with a red head and was assuming this was the case anyway - but the chicks sure are pretty.  Every single buff that has hatched has had perfect little feet and nice vaults...I am acting like a lactating mother around here - every 5 minutes in the brooder room - geesh...I smell like a chick now...CHICKENS-3.jpg

I meant to ask y'all, what color you think my little tiny silkie is. I can't post the pic here, I'm on my iPad. It's supposed to be buff/blue, but I swear it's a partridge color to me. (now I only know what I've been seeing on here.)

I speak about Silkies from across the pond = EU Silkies.

eb and eWh (as also e+) are called duckwings.

Most Silkies have the groundcolor eb (even the Red and Buff) which show grayish undercolor, they are called Partridge. Red and Buff with colored undecolor have groundcolor eWh (as the Wheaten and Salmon). Also the Columbian can have eb or eWh groundcolor.

Point to keep in mind is birds with groundcolor eb are best for the more black-pigmented colorations, these with groundcolor eWh are best for the red-pigmented colorations.

E and ER are called crowwings.

Most Black, Blue, Splash, lavender and Cuckoo have the groundcolor E but can be also ER.

ER should have lacings on the chest. It's very difficult distinguishable in Silkies if your bird have E or ER groundcolor.

Ml is known for producing green shine as Mh is known for producing violet shine.

jumpy.gif crossing the pond should not be an insurmountable problem anymore

Here is my boy with at least one silver gene (silver in his hackles and a little bit in the wing.)  Breeding down the road should tell me what else we have.  Is yours based on E S/S ar/ar, ER, or e?  Or are silkies generally based on eb?  I understood that the addition of Ml turns the green sheen to blue and presence of Ar to a purplish/bronze sheen.
