Silkie thread! - Page 1842

Lila is a very pretty girl.

I have a blue boy, around 11 months.

The last show we were at, the judge wrote "color" on his coop tag.

Still got 1st place, but I am noticing the older he gets, the darker his neck is getting, like Lila.

I don't know, just mentioning it....

I'd like any and all criticism on my blue hen Lila!?

What's good and what's bad?

I realize this is only one picture, I'll take more if anyone would like to see any body parts closer? Do you guys think this one is worth breeding or showing? I would imagine she's definitely a BQ bird? Does not have split wings. She's obviously not her best color at the moment but I'm so glad she's starting to get more "poof" as she gets older! big_smile.png She is approximately 8 months old now, maybe 7. Not sure.

I think she's awesome. Definitely breed quality and possibly show quality. That chick looks black to me but unless it came from a black pen you will probably have to breed it to find out. Cross it with a definite blue and if you get any splash it is dark blue.

Her color look good according to the standard but hard to see the hackle color clearly in the photo. Here's the SOP for blue:

Blue Silkie Bantams (Bearded and Non-Bearded)

Plumage Male and Female
Blue:
Head: Glossy Black
Neck: Hackle- an even shade of clear bluish slate, distinctly laced with glossy black. Front of Neck -- same as breast
Back: Back and Saddle- an even shade of clear bluish state, each feather distinctly laced with glossy black.
Tail: an even shade of bluish slate, each feather distinctly laced with glossy black.
Wings: Bluish slate.
Breast: An even shade of clear bluish slate, each feather having a sharply defined lacing of black.
Body and Fluff: Clear bluish slate.
Legs: An even shade of clear bluish slate, each feather having a sharply defined lacing of black.
Undercolor of All Sections: Bluish Slate

What would a comment like that mean? The judge marked your roosters color for negative?

Everyone seems to think she's blue. Compared to our black hens, she's definitely not black. And actually, when I originally went to get this chick, she was supposed to be a lavender which obviously she isn't.

Maybe she's split for lavender like my dark birds??? (Not black but darker than my blues .... )

That's what I'm hoping.

If that's the case, if bred to a lavender, would she throw lavender chicks?

Very likely, yes. Some splits (always a good thing!) but you should get some lavenders expressing lavender as well. big_smile.png

More pics would help. SQ? Honestly I don't think I would show her...could have a bigger crest and better type. BQ for sure. She carries

her wings nicely, has good foot feathering. But there is always room for improvement in every bird right? Color is gorgeous too btw...

Just to throw you into total confusion, here's a picture of my black hen when she was born. She is now totally black and has produced many babies and no splash. So it's really hard to tell when they are babies. I think yours could go either way but I predict she will at least look black or be black. big_smile.png

I have so many pictures I wouldn't know which ones to post. lol What do you need to see in order to pick her apart some more and I will find, or take, more pictures to post?

Yes, definitely always room for improvement! Me being a perfectionist, I always aim for better.

The sad(?) thing is that this girl is probably my best one. lol But I think this is an ok start, right? I've had Silkies for a good 2 years now, for pets only so I never really cared what they looked like. Some day I will want to get more involved in the breeding, maybe even showing, so I will try to learn as much as possible before I take on something I have no knowledge about.
