I have shown this picture a lot, but I have a nice up-close shot of my cockerel's comb and the color it SHOULD be.  big_smile.png  Notice there are no horn like bumps in it, either.  I was giving him a bath here, so do ignore that he is a flat mess.  ha!

Also, here is a picture of my pullet and her comb with the correct size and color and shape on her comb-- nice and dark and small.  When she is dry and fluffed, it is near impossible to even see her comb, it is hidden in her crest.

and this is them all fluffed and ready to show:

Thank you so much for the detail here.  This is a valuable post for me!

GoldBarRanch, you do not want red in your comb or wattles.  They would be considered pet quality and I would not use them to breed with.  The SOP calls for:

Comb
Male - Walnut - set firmly and evenly on head, almost circular in shape, preferably broader than longer, with a number of small prominences over it, a slight indentation or furrow transversely across the middle, rising at a point just forward of the nostrils and extending backwards to a point parallel with front of eyes.
Female - Walnut - very small, well formed. Rest of the description same as the male.

And you are correct in thinking that the red would be passed down, and it is undesirable.  I do not know if it is a disqualification, as I have not (and will not) show any birds with a red comb.  I do have two hatchery silkie roosters and they have red combs that have little bump like "horns" in them that are also not desirable.  They are in with my layers and are a lot of fun and sweet birds, but will never be mixed with my nice birds.  And if I could get rid of them, I would!  LOL  I've offered to give them away for free locally, but no takers.  hehe!!

@ Hawkeye95 , thanks for sharing that info , I also have a few nice birds that have the red combs that are in with layers only. I so love this forum for learning

When do you start washing your chickens? At a certain age? Do they ever get used to it?

I wash a day before a show.  They aren't ready to show until about 5-6 months old-- sometimes older until they fill out.  Mine do fine with it.  They like the blow out/fluff afterwards the best, though.
