carefully ...............Usually I wash the body of the chicken first and giving the feet special attention then I change the bath water for a rinse. When that part is complete  I wrap the bird in a large towel and hold them foot ball style with the head exposed, tilt the bird so I can wet the head, wet and add soap and rinse the same way. They do tolerate a little water getting into their nostrils. Now it is time for the blow drier.

I have $5 on my cockerels.  Really, I'd give them away free if someone just wanted them.  They are attracting a lot of eating attention right now.  I don't think anyone wants them to pretty up their back yard, and honestly, what else are you going to do with a pet quality bird?  I thought I was really okay with someone eating them, but now I don't know.  BUT I need to get rid of them, they are tearing up my Polish-- I have them thrown in there.  I may just shut my eyes and sell them to the lady that can't speak English.  Sigh.  Ah well...  They are chickens..  I need to get over it.  But I need to think on it another day too...  LOL

For Orientals and Asians, silkies are a delicacy. May as well make some money off of your unwanted birds... Hard, yes... Necessary, yes... I ended up selling all my excess cockerels last early fall. One lady came, an asian lady, and she needed them for her hens to get more chicks...  So, atleast they went into a breeding program, but they went into an eating breeding program. I am ok with this. Another lady came, and older white lady, and she took my last cockerel home on her lap. SO, knew he was going to be a happy pet. She had no roosters either, and thought a silkie would fit her just fine since they are so small. I can get $10 a bird here from the Asians if the bird is nice and hefty for a silkie. All my cockerels that I sold were in excess of three pounds.. SO big boys...

At the very least, wipe the poop off your feet before getting in the car.

That was not a good trip to the store.

I have a rule, I cannot eat an animal that I know personally.  If there is any emotional connection....no yummy in my tummy.

Good point, I don't mind paying $40 or more for a nice little pet, but most people within reason wouldn't pay that for a chicken to eat.

These are small guys-- not hefty in any way.  They are very light weight.  I think $5 is pretty fair for what they are.  I'm in the midwest and everything here costs cheaper, so to price him higher would mean I'd have him forever.  But yeah, I need to get over it.  And maybe I will try $10 on my next set of cockerels and see what happens.

Oh yuck.  Just what I was afraid of.  Is the meat itself black, too??  I don't think I could eat black meat.  Sigh.

#1boy #2girl #3boy #4boy #5girl. This is my guess. Not based on combs but the shape of the beak. Girls seen to have thinner looking longer beaks.
