Oh good! Because this particular chick is very sweet natured and good looking. It's one of my children's favorites. I want friendly but well bred birds.

I do like these bitty guys. A friend said they are so dumb as a breed, but that is OK with me. We aren't looking for chickens who can rewire the house...they are pets for my kids, who can also show them in 4H, and we can eat their eggs too. So they might not be able to forage with the big birds out in our fields (I'd be too worried about them not seeing predators). I'm getting them a large chicken tractor to move around so they can eat bugs and grass yet be safe.

Hi all! I'm so bummed! I only had one egg hatch out from my last shipment of eggs and this little guy has a severely splayed leg, with hip involvement. I've Vetwrapped him all up and now I'm just praying for it to straighten. This is the 3rd splayed chick that I've hatched from 3 separate shipments. Does anyone have any ideas as to what makes this happen???? Are silkies more prone to being splayed? I'm so gun-shy about hatching now, although the only hen that I have that is old enough to go broody just finished up with her last batch. And I would LOVE to introduce some splash into my flock! So discouraging...I'm using a Hova bator 1588 with a fan, if that may be the problem?

I know this should go on the Emergencies, etc thread, but I feel like ya'all are my "friends" wink.png so I thought I would start here...

Are they from your flock? or hatched eggs? It looks like a mix color, not Gray(silver). Looks more like a blue partridge project chicks I've hatched out before...  I bet its a girl though, the pattern/color layout is very girlish

BLUE ^ ^ ^ ^

SPLASH ^ ^ ^ ^

Washed out/Diluted partridge (probably Partridge X BUFF ) that roo in the pictures I bet is the daddy if its from your flock

Partridge

Please confirm girl.. :S   YES - most likely a girl

I have done many, many silkie hatches and never had splayed legs. That does seem really odd. Are you chicks hatching on the day they are supposed to? If not you many have a temperature problem.

As for the others, the buff was the father of all the silkies. He's not great quality in looks, but his personality is unbeatable. He is the best father, and has a wonderful temperament.. Plus his chicks are not half bad! smile.png

I'm so glad you think the first one is a girl. She would be the only one I helped hatch (really late and dried membrane). She is so cute <3

The mothers are both blue and the father is buff (with questionable background) so the splash was a surprise. I didn't think a buff father could produce a splash chick smile.png
