You mentioned these photos were taken in the heat so that puts them at a real disadvantage to look at their type. They look really beautiful! I would especially check their wings for split wing. They are mature birds and there shouldn't be any gaps in the feathers.

According to the incubation books, splayed legs are "almost always caused by a slippery surface in the incubator or brooder that led the chick to injure itself when it tried to stand up.  Make the surface less slippery with appropriate bedding."  "Less common causes of splayed leg include temperature swings in the incubator, vitamin deficiencies, trouble hatching (such as pipping at the wrong end of the egg), or overcrowding causing chicks to pile on top of each other in the brooder."  As quoted from Permaculture Chicken:  Incubation Handbook by Anna Hess.

Show staff is usually allowed to handle the birds--if one has an issue that needs attention, then someone needs to be able to attend to the bird.  I've seen birds get sick, fight through the cages and one get hurt, etc., and it needs to be taken care of right away.  Only owners or those authorized by the show staff should feed or water the birds.  Many exhibitors do not want their birds fed and/or watered before judging.   I know I always take away my birds' water, and many breeders of tight, hard feathered birds do not want them to eat before judging: a bulging crop kind of destroys their type.  That isn't an issue with loose, soft feathered birds like silkies, but dripping wet crests and breasts are certainly an issue.
That's really helpful thanks! I didn't even think to water them from the outside. That saves a lot of grief!

My fiance is helping me, and it is a fair so there will be plenty of children. I hope they don't cause me too many issues! I am doing a Friday afternoon/evening so it will be plenty busy.. I'm excited to be any part of it. It's a first for me, so I'm really looking forward to it smile.png

Consider zip tying cage door closed after judging.  Keeps random people from opening the doors.

They look very nice.  Of course, the real answer is what you are paying for them, and whether the price is worth it to you.

OH hey, I remember you!!  You were wanting silkies last year, I think.  I'm glad you are getting an incubator and going to hatch your own!  That will be fun!  I don't know about the garry farm.  Probably someone else knows more about them than I do.  If they have a website or other people have pictures of grown birds from their eggs-- I would check into that if I were you.  I've only bought eggs from people where I can see the offspring from those eggs.  The quality will depend on how good their background and genetics are and how well you incubate them.  Even if working with really super birds, you won't always get super chicks.  But you should get birds with less faults and are pretty decent if you start with decent parents.  I'm assuming these are along the lines of being pretty decent.  I don't use a hovabator, but I know a lot of people do.  There is a thread here dedicated to them.  You could check it out and ask people who use them.  I would stick with an incubator that had forced or circulated air, so if that is an option, get it!  An egg turner would be really nice, too.  I use a Brinsea Octagon, and it's pretty fool proof, but it costs a bit more.  But I'd buy another one in a heart beat now that I've been using mine for a while.  Just be sure to get a really good hygrometer that can be calibrated and get a good thermometer.  Those are almost more important than the incubator itself!  Good luck!!!  I hope you have fun hatching!  Let us know how it goes!

Thank you....this family is getting out of the whites, and they are just asking $100 for the trio. If they are pretty decent w/out DQ's (which I think they are) it will be more than worth it to me. They will be my first adults, as all I have now are 4 chicks with some more hopefully hatching around Friday. wee.gif
