The pullet is still not ready for laying yet. Hopefully she'll kick in the next week or so. The cockerel is actually quite nice for cockerels! Still struggling to name them. (Henrietta and.....??)

I have one other Silkie:

Can anyone suggest what gender it is? It's a young one and I can't name it until it's been defined. :) I notice it hangs around with the Cockerel more and does get into some squabbles with the pullet. It seems to also be the bottom of the 3 way pecking order .(all the Silkies were getting badly attacked by the other chickens so I had to separate them! Now they enjoy the high-life with their own pen and treats!) Any suggestions on its gender would be really valuable. Thanks ;)

Your little flock is very pretty. :)  What age is the bottom one?

WOW!!! I can never go on vacation again!  Over 100pages I was behind!th.gif

I need your expert opinions.  I have posted before that we have our one lone silkie that is now 15 weeks old.  I know that it can be hard to gender this young but our local fair is coming up and I have to register him (we think) next week.  I think he is pet quality but my daughter couldn't be prouder and he WILL be going to the fairyippiechickie.gif.  Thanks in advance on your confirmation of gender.  I enjoy this thread but it is exhausing to keep up with!

Are those feathers that spike out what you guys call the "streamers"?

Yes those are streamers :) those weird Einstein crazy 'hairs' popping out, with more concentrated in the back is the "roo do" of the silkies. Your boy is young and still in that gawky stage. Males don't look 'good' or their 'best' until close to a year old, you just never know how a boy will turn out until he is closer a year old, and there is so much difference from 4 months to 6 months to 9 months to a year with boys, its amazing.

I say you definitely have a boy there! Leggy, streamers and large comb.

Thanks for the replies.  I thought so based on what I had read on the thread previously but this being our first silkie, I thought it wise to seek professional opinions.bow.gif

Unfortunatly our hatch landed us in roo overload but I know this guy isn't going anywhere.  It is the only breed my daughter wanted and unfortunatly we had the worst hatch from the silkies.

Maybe we will get him a girlfriend down the road.  However, my daughter wants to make "Mutts" just to see how they will turn out.  Who knows what will happen!hu.gif

They are constantly pulling out feathers. I've brought him inside for now and take him out during the day so he can run in the yard but I can't leave him alone with the other birds. Any ideas how to get him better incorporated with the others? or are we going to just have an indoor chicken?

forgot to reply to this one.  Are all the others LF birds, or are they a crested breed too?  I have found that my LF pick on my crested birds.  A reason I don't keep my silkies with my other birds.  When his hormones kick in, he'll have the upper hand and they may leave him alone.

First is BB, who is 23 weeks old.  I'm really hoping it's a girl...no streamers yet.

Next is Mohawk, a 16 week old splash.  sad.png Unfortunately, he was re-homed last night because there are a few red feathers coming in on his wings.  But, he was hilarious to watch.  He kept coming beside me and thrusting his chest out like, "Look Ma, I've got good type"!

And the last photo is of Cinnamuffin my surprise partridge.  She is also just 16 weeks old and such a sweety.  I'm afraid she'll just be kept for a pet or a broody or a therapy chicken to nursing homes.  Peepsblessed pointed out that she may have split wing.  Sometimes she holds her wing down and it opens like scissors. sad.png But, she has the best type so far and stands this way for hours....not really, but you know what I mean.

YES, YES, YES!!!  Gorgeous, all of them!  Are you sure the partridge has a split?  It does look like something is going on with it.  Have you spread the wings to double check? How old is it?

He's very pretty.  He has a really long back right now.  But he could potentially fill in very nicely when he ages.  By a year, he should have most of his feathers in.  You might be surprised what he will look like.  I'd hang on to him just to see.  I'd get him a couple of little white girl friends.  wink.png

I've had a hell of a time hatching silkies for some reason.  This time I finally got a few.  Here is a pic.  The guy in the back is having a bad hair day.  Still a little stiff from hatching.  smile.png

There is a thread called silkie mixes.  So I  only have one and she is so cute.  Soft black feathers with a small crest. I also have a polish mix, bantam buff laced polish rooster over a white ameraucana hen. The pullet is small white with small crest, nice beard and muffs. I am expecting her to lay blue eggs.  I love my Silkies and Polish and their mixes.  big_smile.png
