Silkie thread! - Page 2288

Any thoughts or comments on her? i bought her today.

Hi. These are my Silkies:

The pullet is still not ready for laying yet. Hopefully she'll kick in the next week or so. The cockerel is actually quite nice for cockerels! Still struggling to name them. (Henrietta and.....??)

I have one other Silkie:

Can anyone suggest what gender it is? It's a young one and I can't name it until it's been defined. :) I notice it hangs around with the Cockerel more and does get into some squabbles with the pullet. It seems to also be the bottom of the 3 way pecking order .(all the Silkies were getting badly attacked by the other chickens so I had to separate them! Now they enjoy the high-life with their own pen and treats!) Any suggestions on its gender would be really valuable. Thanks ;)

I need your expert opinions.  I have posted before that we have our one lone silkie that is now 15 weeks old.  I know that it can be hard to gender this young but our local fair is coming up and I have to register him (we think) next week.  I think he is pet quality but my daughter couldn't be prouder and he WILL be going to the fair.  Thanks in advance on your confirmation of gender.  I enjoy this thread but it is exhausing to keep up with!

WOW!!! I can never go on vacation again!  Over 100pages I was behind!

I need your expert opinions.  I have posted before that we have our one lone silkie that is now 15 weeks old.  I know that it can be hard to gender this young but our local fair is coming up and I have to register him (we think) next week.  I think he is pet quality but my daughter couldn't be prouder and he WILL be going to the fair.  Thanks in advance on your confirmation of gender.  I enjoy this thread but it is exhausing to keep up with!

Help! I have a banty white silkie roo that is 4 months old now. He is sweet and seems pretty healthy. Our problem is that all of the other birds we have pick on him. ALL of them. They are constantly pulling out feathers. I've brought him inside for now and take him out during the day so he can run in the yard but I can't leave him alone with the other birds. Any ideas how to get him better incorporated with the others? or are we going to just have an indoor chicken?

The more I look at it, that's what I was worried about. I'll be calling the vet in the morning. I wouldn't want the hen to suffer even if it means putting her down.

We were discussing correct "type" the other day and I wasn't sure if any of my silkies had it.  Well, I sat in their pen with them and caught a few of them showing they did have it -I think!   I appreciate, Peepsblessed, Sonoran Silkies and Hawkeye for sharing input and examples.

First is BB, who is 23 weeks old.  I'm really hoping it's a girl...no streamers yet. 

Next is Mohawk, a 16 week old splash.   Unfortunately, he was re-homed last night because there are a few red feathers coming in on his wings.  But, he was hilarious to watch.  He kept coming beside me and thrusting his chest out like, "Look Ma, I've got good type"!

And the last photo is of Cinnamuffin my surprise partridge.  She is also just 16 weeks old and such a sweety.  I'm afraid she'll just be kept for a pet or a broody or a therapy chicken to nursing homes.  Peepsblessed pointed out that she may have split wing.  Sometimes she holds her wing down and it opens like scissors.  But, she has the best type so far and stands this way for hours....not really, but you know what I mean.

Thanks for the replies.  I thought so based on what I had read on the thread previously but this being our first silkie, I thought it wise to seek professional opinions.

Unfortunatly our hatch landed us in roo overload but I know this guy isn't going anywhere.  It is the only breed my daughter wanted and unfortunatly we had the worst hatch from the silkies.

Maybe we will get him a girlfriend down the road.  However, my daughter wants to make "Mutts" just to see how they will turn out.  Who knows what will happen!
