? Meyer Hatchery in Ohio...

I completely agree about the USPO. I received my very first chicks ever two weeks ago. They where shipped from Healthy Chicks and More Wednesday morning (just outside of Cinci). We're just south of Cleveland. The Akron Post Office called me Wednesday evening (that's like - what? - maybe 7 hours after they left Healthy Chicks) and said I could come to Akron and pick them up if I wanted - otherwise, they'd go to our local PO in the morning. I couldn't make it to Akron that evening, so had to wait (fretting - it was COLD - temps in the teens, but she assured me the chicks would be inside). At 6:45 the next morning, my local PO called and told me they'd arrived. I went and picked them up immediately. So, less than 24 hours after they'd left the hatchery, 22 of the 20 I ordered were alive and well and ensconsed in the brooder. Yep, they threw in two extra - and they're all still doing great today, two weeks after arrival. Gotta say, I'm very happy with how the PO handled this...

Pasty butt is a symptom of shipping stress. It's not your fault or Meyers' fault. It just goes with the territory when you have shipped chicks. Not nessecarily the PO's fault either - a couple days shipping can be hard on chicks, even when the PO does an excellent job with the handling.

ETA: enjoy your new chickies! they're only little once...LOL

BOUGHT FROM THEM SEVERAL TIMES THIS PAST YEAR, I REALLY LIKE THE PLACE BUT I ONLY LIVE 15 MINUTES AWAY SO ALL ORDERS ARE PICKED UP IN STORE. I HAVE STOPPED JUST TO SEE WHAT THEY HAVE AS OVERFLOW ONCE ORDERS ARE FILLED. NICE PEOPLE TO DEAL WITH. WISH EVERYTHING COULD BE PICKED UP IN STORE BUT SOMETHINGS MUST COME FROM DIFFERENT HATCHERY.

I've ordered from Ideal once before and had a really good experience, but this year they were out of stock on everything we wanted (note to self, start earlier next year, LOL). I found Meyer Hatchery and placed an order yesterday for 15 chicks (14 different breeds - we like variety!), my internet was acting up so I called to place my order, she told me they were only an hour from us, so I decided to pick them up. I'm was super excited, but then I stumbled across http://davesgarden.com/products/gwd/c/6560/ - the scoop on Meyers Hatchery - and I am nervous now... I'm glad I found all the super reviews here, but I'm still hesitant about my order. Can anyone give me tips on what to look for when I pick them up? I want to try to exchange any sickly looking ones while there - if they pass away after we get them home, I won't know which replacement to ask for as I can't identify the breeds. Should I bring food/water for the drive home or will they be ok for the hour+ transit? I did get them Mareks vaccines, but declined the vital gel & stuff, I think I'll add it when I get there, or will the stuff from Tractor supply suffice just fine? All of our chicks from Ideal survived fine, with little extra work from us, but I want to be prepared for these guys...

We gave some roosters to a guy last night & he said he bought some chicks from Meyer 20 years ago and they had cocci, and to this day he can't have turkeys on his property bc the cocci still wipes them out... What?!?

Most friendly hatchery in the area, very very nice people that work there! Good prices too, they also have supplies for raising them :D

We ordered last year from Meyer and were very pleased with our order. The price was very good and the chickens were all good when we received them. The only thing I do like a lot better from Murray McMurray is the shots they offer before shipping. Meyer only offers the Marek's vaccine and the cost per shot is a lot more at Meyer. However, if you do not get the start up shots then a very good deal. We have been pleased. Linda
