Can chickens eat walnuts??

Yikes! Just this morning, I just found out that peach pits are poisonous and I realized that some of my chickens are eating them.

They seem to be eating the buried ones that are sprouting. There are zillions of pits. I am going to try to get lay pellets and alfalfa cubes to supplement them and see if that takes them away from this iffy forage.

The walnuts I have are just the bagged type from the store--chopped, I think....

I didn't know about peach pits--but we are not in the neck of the woods where this would be a concern for us! LOL

I do like to give them things to play with--they really liked pumpkin back in the fall...

They also like acorns. Some years we have gazillions of them in the driveway, and they like to pick out the little bits of smashed up ones. You could probably rake up tons of them in the fall and keep them to give the birds in the winter for extra energy when it's super cold out.

I wonder is the protein especially good during their molt? My little six month old here prefers brazil and walnuts to her mash and she is molting, also eating her own feathers. Would it be better to feed her cat food?
