Should I get my chicks vaccinated for Marek's disease??

I mean it's only $.15 per chick. I'm going to get 30 so that'll be $4.50. I've never vaccinated my chicks for mareks disease and they're healthy! but should I get them vaccinated so that I don't worry about it later? Let me know what's your opinion smile

Thanks

YES!!!  I didn't order the vaccine.  I don't know why, because as you said, it's only a few cents extra.  Then I started reading about all the different diseases and ailments chicks and chickens could get, and I started stressing.  Thankfully, I called the week before they shipped and had it added.  I felt SO much better about the situation then...one less thing to worry about. smile

I would vaccinate mine because that would be one less thing to worry about and I get paranoid about diseases and I will worry about them if they arent vaccinated

What do you do if you are buying the chicks from someone locally?

Yes, the vaccine used at big hatcheries is better than what is available to the little guy.

I give my chicks Marek's Vaccine if I hatched mine here or got the chicks from someone locally. Just give them a shot.  Noriko.

What is involved in vaccinating them yourself?  Roughly how much does it cost?  I am getting about 11 chicks from a local breeder that does not vaccinate.

1 Silver Laced Wyandotte, 2 Gold Laced Wyandotte, 1 BLRW, 1 Columbian Wyandotte, 4 Rhode Island Red, 6 Easter Eggers, 3 Barred Rock, 3 Welsummer, 2 Buff Orpington, 2 White Leghorn, 2 Brown Leghorn, 3 Gold Sex Links, 2 Delaware, 1 Mixed Maran.    And a partridge in a pear tree... (just kidding on the partridge).

I see this post is from 2 years ago but thought i would reply. I did get my 12 chicks vaccinated for mareks. That is the main reason I ordered my chicks from a hatchery because of them getting vaccinated. Though i paid $1.00 a chick for the shot. But a few extra bucks was worth it to me to not lose any of my chicks. I bet you could buy the shots from a feed store or maybe even TSC and give the shot your self. If not do like above and maybe call a vet.

I am a Wife and a Mother. We have 2 dogs, and our always growing flock of chickens(Barred Rocks, White Rocks, Silver Laced Wyandottes, Easter Eggers, Olive Eggers, Marans, Japanese Bantams, Silkies, Silver Laced Cochin, Silkie/EE crosses, and a Cream Legbar Roo). We also have Bourbon Red Turkeys!  And now Ducks!!! Soon to be arriving Nigerian Dwarf doelings.
