amsunshine - that looks very neat! I love it! The chickens look happy and your happy with the set up - and shoot I don't think it looks half bad at all! - Very resourceful and creative !  I hope you move and can have happy scratching outdoor/indoor chickens and your family room to the peoples!

I don't have house chickens but I have a sweet bantam rooster I bring in for a visit.  He comes to the back door asking to come in.  Lots of  people keep parrots in the house why not chickens?  Your post made me smile.  I hug my chickens all the time. Neighbors think I'm crazy.

I have a li'l chick that I would LOVE to make into a house chicken, but I think Farmer Lew would have my head on a platter if I did.

I also tried the "but the dog and cats come in the house!" argument.  His response was valid:  The dog and the cats will use the pet door to go outside to make potty.  The chickens, not so much.

Fair enough.  But make no mistake... I will find a way to have a house chicken at SOME point!

I am absolutely fascinated with the subject of keeping your pet chicken inside.  I am a beginner (live in Brisbane/Australia) and have no chickens at the moment.  At present I am trying to get my coup organised.  I was blessed to receive a galvanised steel type shed with wiring on the front part.  So I am in the process in transforming this shed into a compfy chicken coop.  I am open to any suggestions.......   I am thinking of using sugar cane mulch for the floor as this is readily available and cheap here in Queensland the sugar cane capital of Australia.  What do you think?

 

I am planning to buy 5 Rhode Island Reds and I would love to purchase a silky as a house pet.  I too was wondering how to train your chicken to live inside.  Your information, suggestion and experiences has been quite helpful.  I am just wondering if the silky will be OK with my pet pomeranian Oli.  Would you be able to wash your chicken (silkie) with wool wash as this has eucalyptus in it and would be a good disinfectant especially around the bum area and I believe it would control or hinder the spread of any disease, definitely smell nice and make the chicken feel soft.  

Have any of you had experience with Rhode Island Reds?  What do you think of the breed?

I'd love to revive this thread. It's a bit old but Im thinking of having a house chicken and I'd love some advice from you guys. My Silkie roo is 8 weeks old and he's had various special needs since he arrived at 3 days old. I know having a roo inside won't be a great idea but I have a LF roo who doesnt like him and not enough supplies to build him a separate coop. My idea was to have a small outdoor run where he could be during the day while I'm at school and have a dog kennel for when he's indoors at night. But since silkies are so fluffy would I need to trim his feathers around his vent so the poo wouldn't get stuck to him in the diaper? Thanks.

I usually have a house chicken or two running around and they are messy, so a diaper would help. Also keep him in certain areas of the house only. Mine used to go into the kitchen  and send mugs and cups flying when they jump on the counters, causing chaos. But if you keep him outside most of the time and let him sleep inside it should be o.k.

 

Just watch for 05:00am wake-up crows, hey.

Yea that's him. He's the sweetest of the 10 chickens we have now. I'm sure that if he makes through his current issue, my mom will finally relent to having him in the house. We have cats so he would never be loose in the house unsupervised. Since Silkies can't fly well we will probably end up with baby gates everywhere lol but I'm so attached to him, I just can't sell him even though my big roo hates him.

okay so i need a house turkey diaper what is the best way to measure? 

Beaker & Scooter, on my lap while watching tv in my recliner chair. Still unsure of sex's lol if they are a rooster no worries as I live on 40 acres no close nieghbours to worry about.. 

 

 

Hello new to having house chicken's but I must admit I LOVE IT!!.  Yes some of the people in my life think I have gone over the deep end.  However what most of them don't know is how much mental thereapy I receive from my silkie pair.

 

 During last fall I had some pretty serious health issues.  I ended up with a blood clot in the lung, cuppled with very sudden onset of sleep apnea.  I actually woke up several times not breathing which is the scariest feeling I have ever had.  several weeks past and I was mostly recovered and now having to use a c-pap machine to bed to stop me from not breathing when I sleep.  But by this point I had developed anxiety about going to sleep, I guess fear of not waking up in time to breath.  It was purley a mental anxiety issue that I needed to get over.  The fact that my DH also worked afternons I was all on my own until 2:00 am did'nt help my anxiety. 

 

I had always wanted a silkie chicken and finally picked up a pair of 2 week olds.  Initially they were supposed to be kept in my spare bedroom in a brooder, however before you knew it I was taking them to bed with me while I read.  Normally it would take a long time to try to get myself to sleep and sometimes I would even have to resort to an anti anxiety aid. 

 

But what I noticed was as soon as I put them on my chest and heard their funny little bird song noises that they make it would put me to sleep almost right away!

What was funny too with my c-pap mask on, they were so curious they would get right up to check it out.  I think they thought I was a bird too because I had a "beak" maybe their Moma! lol

 

I find myself  taking  them with me everywhere now, to the grocery store, to my horse shows. I have fabric dog carrier that I tote them around with.

 

I cannot go a single day with out getting in my "silkie time" I have to get a coudle in or I feel like the day is incomplet. 

 

Just thougt I would share my story here, without any fear of judgement for taking chickens to bed with me!
