Mixed Scovy Ducklings - Hatch Grow Journal - Update 2/2011 - Lost One - Page 4

So exciting!  We're actually pretty happy with the idea of a mutt duck cross between an Ancona and a Muscovy!  It sounds like the Ancona's are fairly friendly as well as wonderful egg layers.  Any idea on which side they'll get the vocalization from?  (Hoping they'll still be on the quiet side!)

smithzoo, thank you so much for the advice on making a mash!  They're still beginning to make a bit of a wet mess, but it seems like a lot less mess/waste off the bat than I remember from last time.

They are SO SO cute!  I love to hear their peeping!  So hard to go to bed at night with them looking up at me like, "where are you going?  Aren't you going to cuddle here with us?" love

well, if they do not have anything hanging out of their butts and if they aren't crippled and if they are active, I wouldn't worry bout' them. They look healthy to me! wink

I have 4 beautiful Bronze Turkeys, 16 Rhode Island Red's, 10 Barred Rocks, 6 Delawares, 5 Buff Orpingtons, 4 Black stars, 1 Black Australorp, 3 Partridge Rocks, 1 Silver-Laced Wyandotte, 1 Ameraucana. I have had in the past: Lavendar Guineas, Pearl Guineas, Ducks, Quails. I have owned and have experience with almost all the chicken breeds. Maybe I am the Animal Hoarder in my community! LOL

NiftyChick, Glad that you guys love them (especially considering if we hadn't gotten them to you when we did, they would be outlaws in 27 days!!!). Adding water to the mash to make a slightly moist, crumbly mixture with the addition of the brewer's yeast to make sure that the ducklings are getting the niacin that they need has been one of those things that made my life so much easier. Since it helps to make caring for our fluffy little charges that much easier, it makes it that much more fun  love   Kiss those grand-babies for me!!

FYI, for smithzoo, I think Lemon was from the egg that said "Cricket? 1/24", Lilly's egg said "1/28", and Brownie's egg said "1/17"

I think all the eggs were about the same creamy white color.

They do seem to be turning a bit "blue" or gray where their darker splotches are.  Even Brownie looks like she'll probably be a soft gray color.

They're still super cute!  We took them outside yesterday and let them swim again today.  Will try & post pics soon!

Well, today is technically day 35, so we'll keep the 3 eggs cooking for another day or so and will call it quits if we don't see anything.  sad

On a happy note, the girls (we're thinking positive) went out for a fun day in the sun:

Lemon, Brownie, Lilly

Their feathers are already coming in!  hit    Why must the little ones grow up so fast?
