I am in the Houston area, actually about an hour NW in Montgomery, TX. I have a khaki Campbell drake, Nuck, that is 14 mos old and I am at wits end with him. My ducks had everyone's roles in place and Nuck was the not-so-dominate male to three hens. I know 2 drakes to 3 hens isn't ideal, but it worked. Until recently.
My two blue Swedish hens went broody and we now have several month-old ducklings, but during the times they were sitting their nests, I had to keep the drakes out of the duck pen. A couple of weeks ago, my favorite hen, my white and fawn Indian runner, was killed by a raccoon, I'm assuming. One of the mother hens has taken on the role of sidekick to the two drakes, abandoning her role as Nuck's special "buddy." The other mother hen wants to nothing to do with him, yet the minute I try to let her and the ducklings out in the yard and pond, he's all over her. She freaks out and seeks refuge for herself and the babies back in the pen. The babies need to be out and about during the day, but with Nuck constantly there, it's not happening. We've had lots of rain and their pen really needs a few hours a day to be cleaned up and given time to kinda air out. I've decided the only solution is to find a new home for Nuck. I'd actually planned on trying to find homes for both drakes and any of the ducklings which turn out to be drakes to prevent inbreeding. Right now I'm planning to keep Abu, the dominant male who's a pekin, but really need to find a new home for Nuck. I'd be willing to deliver him to anyone who can give him a good home, assuming it's not too far of a drive (~2 hrs max). Is anyone looking for a khaki Campbell drake? He's really a good looking duck, he just needs a few hens he can call his own.
