As far as breeds.  I would suggest Brown Leghorn, good egg layer, or a Old English Game Bird.  Both are very well adapted to free ranging and avoiding predators.

That is the exact thing I want! If only they weren't so darn pricey. I had been saving my pennies to get one but then the dang drought came, hay prices skyrocketed and I had to pay an arm and a leg for round bales for my horses. I have been hunting on Craigslist for a smallish one but people don't seem to be selling them sad.png Guess it's just another thing to add to the " In the foreseeable future " list. Man that thing grows longer everyday!

I love the dog kennels for pens.Got em from yard sales and craiglist. They are great. But my main big pen is just 1in. chicken wire, cause at the time couldnt afford chainlink.  But it has an electric fence around it to keep all the predators out..I got it from Ace hardware only 25 dollars for the charger. So this is a good money saver if you want to go this route. Btw I never had a coon get thru the wire and I live by a swamp full of them. I dont want to get into the chickenwire debate .  I will say" Yeah I guess I was just lucky for almost 10 years." Most coons will try and dig or climb to get in. So bury it down a foot and out a foot if you do.But again the electric fence fixes all that debate anyway. If ya got the money use hardware cloth or chainlink.

lost my barred rock tonight, don't know to what yet. We were out later than expected (long story) and got home, all the girls had gone into the coop and even the babies were out in the open in the dog crate with the door open, but only my POL barred rock girl was missing. We searched as well as we could but no feathers, etc no signs of foul play. I kinda think the neighbor boy took her-he was throwing oranges at them yesterday.

I am so sorry for your loss.I cant imagine how that feels but fear it so much myself.I have city chickens,I am one of the very few.The neighborhood kids find them to be a novelty. One day my dogs alerted me,by the time I went out they were in the neighbors yard but I think they had been in mine.My EE had a bunch of feathers missing-too many to have been caused by another bird.

Got the scare of my life tonight.  There was some sort of pit viper tangled up in the deer netting between the runs.     Quite dead.  I don't know if he was after the baby chicks or water.  It was to dark to get a decent picture. I'll try tomorrow.  If the chickens haven't eated it by then.  It had a triangular head, about 2 ft. long, pattern on its body, no rattle.  What caught my attention was the chicken ruckus and noticed the netting had been partly torn down.  It's the same run in the pics I posted earlier today.

Found my old brood mare dead, she was still warm so it must of happened just before I got home. She was a Rocky Mountain Horse and one of the original foundation mares for the RMHORSE Breed. She was at least 26-28 years old. Born on a mountain and certified as a foundation mare when she was an adult, so not sure what year she was foaled. Looked like an heart attack (no thrashing). Looked like she had a peaceful death. I sure will miss my Bridget girl.... She was my 14.2-16 hand girl.

Thank-you for a wonderful time in my life Bridgie, and for BayBaby her daughter who will carry on your legacy. I will meet you again at the Rainbow Bridge my friend.

I found a great photo of my old girl of when she was around 24 and being bred to an International Grand Champion, had a fantastic foal.c6e4eb5e-b756-ee38.jpg

Welcome, Reed! We met at the swap, too. I float between here and facebook.

I'm so excited! Yesterday was hatch day, and I got some goodies! I have 6 Marradura Basque (Euskal Oiloa) and one more trying to get out, 4 Sweedish Flowers, and 3 Silver and 2 Golden Laced Brahmas. Next week I've got some White Leghorn / Ameraucana EEs hatching.

Obviously I can't keep them all, so after they grow out a bit I'll figure out what's available for purchase. big_smile.png

I'v had a backyard flock for about two years. I have a Leghorn, a Production Red, a Barred Rock, a French Copper Marans, an EE, two OE, an Ameraucana, Buff Brahma, and a BLRW. And two Rouen ducks and a mess of pigeons. And a partridge in a pear tree.......
