LOL, morning Sam!

Spring is just arund the corner, the Carolina Wrens are looking for places to nest on our front porch. They choose the darnedest places- last year I had a bucket hanging from a post sideways, and they built a nest in it. The year before, they nested in a backpack I had hung outside to air out. Birdhouses everywhere, but nooooooo, we want some upscale digs!

The Wrens love nesting in the hanging baskets I put on the front porch.  Guess what I saw flying through the backyard this morning?  A male Bluebird... gorgeous!  There is a pair of Mourning Doves that hang out on top of the chicken coop/shed and feed beneath the bird feeders.  Last year a pair nested in the Leyland cyprus trees, probably the same pair.  I love birds!  smile

The Bradford Pears in my yard are absolutely loaded with huge buds... Spring is near!!!!!   celebrate

(Pssssst, is Opa's first name really Sam?)

Yesterday I watched a pair of "gate" birds fly in.  One of my sons thought sandhill cranes sound like someone opening a rusty gate so I can't help but think "gate bird" when I hear their raucous call.  With the turkey toms strutting through the yard and now the arrival of the sandhill cranes spring can't be very far off.  I still think that I will wait before storing the snowblower for the year.  Mother Nature just might take that as a dare.

When having problems with chickens stop and think, what would Harlan do?
I've dealt with many thorns in my life and the flower is always worth the effort.

and that's just one more reason your neighbors should keep their dogs locked up.

Yep.

Don't get all your exercise leaping to conclusions!

Poultry- they may be your pets, they may be your hobby, they may be your livestock. But remember, if you fall down in the pen, unconscious? They WILL eat you.

Great to see all the Texans!!!!!  I was born in San Antonio, raised on a cattle ranch in Oklahoma, and moved to Dallas when I was 18.  Lived there all the way until four years ago, when I moved up here to marry a Yank (I'll be 40 in May-shhhhh!).  Southern guys are nice, but I had to move up here to find one without a skoal can imprint on his butt.  LOL!  I love it up here-love the four seasons, love it that there's water in the lakes, and the Summers are perfect (except for the skeeters).  Lilacs are over-rated, though, IMO.  I fell in love with them when I first moved here, but quickly became annoyed.  They're beautiful for a couple of weeks, and then they're like weeds.  One thing I do miss is Southern charm.  The men up here are nice enough, but I've had a hard time with the women.  I miss well-mannered, demure, soft-spoken, nurturing women who love make-up and gettin' all dolled up.  I think I've just been meeting the wrong women, though.  Either way, it's great to see some Texans on here.

As far as Spring, I haven't noticed anything popping up yet except for the multiple mounds of yak poop that are showing now that the snow is melting.  Yuck-our pastures look like a big, bumpy pile of poop.  I can't wait until it's dry enough to get out there with the quad and break it all up.  The creek is so full and running so fast that I can hear it all the way up from the house.  We're talking about building an elevated duck house down there so that we can move the ducks to the creek later on and have a safe place to lock them in at night.  Love my chickens, but I think the ducks would like a creek better than hanging out with the chickens.

gig I agree, I guess we will be meeting at chickenstock [I am from the south too]

gig I am  married to one of those Texans with the Skoal imprint on his rear!  I had to move to Texas to to find my soul mate-outdoorsy, hunts, fishes, works with his hands and ain't afraid to sweat-he's a keeper!  We'll be married 21 years in May.
Love the San Antonio area-hot, but really beautiful.  Had a brother that lived in Dallas for years-really great for a big city-probably my favorite metro area(and I'm not a fan of cities-give me my Piney Woods any day!).

Sending them your way! We had about 3 1/2 feet of snow here in NY, so I know how you feel, and 4 days without power, it was a mess. Still cleaning up downed trees and such. We still have some snow, but it is melting and it is nice and sunny and warm! Its supposed to be near 60 here today!

Oh, by the way, I love Gary Larsen, The Far Side!
