What age do Polish hens begin laying?

I had one Polish hen once, but she got bit by a black widow spider, and died.  /img/smilies/hit.gif  But I will say that I heard that they don't lay as well as some other breeds.  So maybe they are just taking longer since from what I've heard they are not kept for their laying ability or for meat.
I have a book I bought from tractor supply and I've also researched this a lot I have 6 different colors of polish, and around 30 polish total! I've read multiple places that they are excellent layers (they lay 200+ eggs a year!) That was the exact word "excellent layer" its a book with 100 different breeds of chickens in it, and each breed has 2 pages full of all the information you could possibly need to know about that particular that breed! If you research some polish are not only absolutely beautiful and unique, they are actually really really good layers! Only negative with the polish breed is they are not known for being broody! I don't care even if they just laid 100 eggs a year I would be happy with the breed and keep them! Polish chickens are just so fun to have! I couldn't imagine having chickens and not having a couple polish in the mix! It's defiantly a bonus that they lay like I said 200+ eggs a year!

I have 2 black white crested polish hens & 1 roo. They all are 8 months old. My hens haven't laid the 1st egg yet. So thus thread has really made me feel better. Thanks to all who posted.

Love the lost dead threads..... I saved 2 polish hens from an animal border that in now dealing with animal control and I was wondering if they will ever lay eggs.... now I have hope and it doesn't seem so lost any more. I can only have 10 girls in town so 2 that don't lay make my egg count go down fast. They are needing me so I saved them!!. I hope they lay. If they don't I'll keep them anyway but eggs I can at least hope for now. They were malnutrished it's not even funny so they may never lay. We will see. Happy chickens from Pueblo Colorado.

Old thread I know but very useful as I have been debating polish to our mix. Now I won't freak out or panic if eggs don't show up for 9months-a year.
Thanks for sharing folks!

I recently got a polish hen she's almost 6 months and I'm pretty excited to see when she's going to give me her first egg, introducing poor little Shirley to our tough winter hardy birds didn't go over to well, now she's isolated from the rest, would this affect her laying process, I've been looking all over online but alot of its contradictory to other things I'm reading , any opinions ??

Since polish breeds don't start laying until much older in some cases, can I feed them layer feed even if they aren't laying yet? I have 14 laying hens, 3 - 5 month polish and 2 - 5 month old Cochins. Will it hurt the 5 month old girls if I put everyone back on later? Right now I have all 19 on grower.
