I've decided to start my new flock this year from chicks rather than trying to find young hens at the point of lay.

I wonder what y'all think of Cochins.

What are your experiences?

Do you think they would live well with BOs and Plymouth Rocks? These two I've settled on for sure.

My cochin bantams are wonderful.
I have 7 (3 roos, 4 pullets) and they all have an amazing personality and are very calm.

I would definitely recommend this breed.

I have standard Cochins. Sure, they'd probably get along with any other breed, provided you didn't mind a bunch of mixed-breed chickens. My Cochins mate anything that stands still long enough, including other roos. Weirdly, my Buttercup roosters only like Buttercup girls. The Cochins aren't racist at all, though, they like all the beautiful ladies.

Mine have a range of personalities from nervous to calm. All tend to be dominant in the pecking order, though. My head roo, Hugo, is quite cuddly when he wants to be, lets himself be held.

Not so many eggs. More than I expected, more than Henderson's breed chart indicates, but they don't lay half as well as my EEs.

I have 6 standard cochins have 2 roos in the main flock pen and they get along well one protector one prolificater ( and she means anything that will stand still) I do have to disagree on the egg part at least for now I have had people say that you will only get 1 or 2 eggs per week or 40-60 a year with these birds however my blue female has only skipped 3 day since she started laying 3 weeks ago, I am willing to bet it has to do with them going broody ( which I plan on letting mine at least once a year, and my pullet that just started has laid 3 one every other day so far.

My girlfriend has 10 cochins and all are great! Even now in the middle of a MN winter she is getting 7-10 eggs a day!! She has other breeds of standards as well and as far as I know there has not been a problem. In my next chick order (hopefully very soon) I plan on including some cochins.

I've had bantams--black, partridge, reds, whites, buffs--they were all very similiar. Easy going, go broody on a rock, great parents altho they do not defend their chicks from predators. They lay a little worse than other bantams due to going broody so easily. They aren't as broody as silkies which are born broody and die broody.

I love my standard cochins! They have wonderful personalities. I don't have any cochin roos but the pullets are all sweet. I'm getting 5 to 2 eggs a week from them but 3 of them have just started laying this week. They will be 6mos. old next week.

I have a bantam Cochin cockeral, and he is the sweetest thing! Loves to cuddle, has a cute crow.

I have a cochin egg in my group in the incubator, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed it hatches into a pullet. Great birds!

I have banty cochins. Right now i only have 3, 1 buff hen and 1 black hen. And 1 red roo. The hens are so sweet and friendly. My little black one is 9 months old and is broody and sitting on 4 eggs. They should hatch next week.
