Hi smile

My La Fleche chicks will be 3 weeks old next week so I will post a few picture of them then. Today I noticed a few to about half of them having a few small feathers sprouting off the top of their head. I am very happy with this as this is a common trait in the La Fleche breed.big_smile

Hi becky3086

Thank You big_smile   I have found a new home for the two with bad combs this weekend. My total La Fleche chick count is down to 18 from 25.

( 1 was dead on arrival, 4 culled for not keeking up with the rest in the first week, 2 culled for having bad combs in the third week. )

This is a breed I first met as a teenager and have kept an interest though not yet of an ownership sort. They are very neat breed in a lot of ways. It will be fun to follow the progress of your group. Is it alright to ask where they came from? There are a few breeders and at least one hatchery who has used some excellent stock to improve certain characteristics. Not common at all and good ones even scarcer but an old breed that cannot be replicated from more modern kinds of chickens.

Hi Hillside

My Black La Fleche stock came from Ideal Poultry. I have already noticed many La Fleche traits in my chicks. Wide, cavernous nostrils  /  trace of a crest on many of my chicks /  and very shy & standoffish compared to most other chicks I have raised. All of these traits the La Fleche breed got from the Crevecoeur breed.smile

To me they seem to be growing and feathering out fairly quickly.

Hi becky3086

Yes they are, I will be glad when they get through the ugly feathering stage.big_smile They are some of the most flighty chicks I have ever raised. When I am setting still they seem very tame coming just about to my feet, but when I move around them they are flying everywere!D

I am not surprised since most of my crested chickens are really flighty especially when they haven't grown in the crests and can still see and since these were developed from crevecoeurs, I am not surprised that the flighty trait seems to be passed on.

Can you tell me are you raising these for meat?  If so when or what is your time frame for processing?  12/14 weeks or longer?   What is the weight range you are reaching for?

I am currently raising naked necks for meat and just read about this bird and read it is one of the best tasting birds out there.
