Ivermectin for DOGS for Heartworms?

It's 1/10th cc or ml per 10 pounds. You aren't going to kill the dog if you go a little over or under. If you think the dog has heart worms give the dog a 1/4 th of the treatment per week. I think I saw somone posted something similar about treating horses and I've been told the same thing by veterinarians. The vet uses ivermectin and arsenic to treat heart worm positive dogs. I'm not sure if you can use ivermectin to treat your cat but I did see them treat a human on "monsters inside me" TV show. As far as I know ivermectin kills all parasites except for hook or maybe a whip worms in all animals. The meds from the vet are Ivermectin. Ivermectin will NOT hurt your dog if the dog has heart worms and neither will the heart worm pill from your veterinarian.

Welcome to BYC!

FYI, 1/10 ml (0.1 ml) = 1000 micrograms (1 mg) = 3.67 Heartgard pills for large dogs (51-100 pounds).

I wouldn't feel comfortable using this drug, especially for smaller dogs. There are to many risks for complications and overdose. At the vet's office where I worked for, we had several cases of toxicity

Here is some information to be aware of: Giving Ivomec to dogs

I am so lost as what to do for my dogs heartworms. I cannot afford the treatment from the vet , I have not go any x rays done but from my dogs symptoms I believe he is pretty far advanced he is a 9 year old boxer . I have read that ecenacia goldenseal , milk thistle ,vitamin e and oregano oil work which I have been giving one of each 3 Times a day for the last few days and it seems to help his coughing stops for a few hours after each dose I also ordered black walnut pills and I have the ivomec for cattle I am just scarred to give it to him . Will it kill him if the heartworm are adults?

Can you go to one of the vaccine clinics at some place like Tractor Supply, Petsmart, Petco, etc? I think they do low cost testing.

for a dog that might have a heavy load, at-home treatment is very much NOT recommended. Adult heartworms (and if the test is positive for larva in the bloodstream, there ARE adults) and if the dog hasn't been treated in a while before or after the test, it is likely heavy. And since the dog is showing advanced symptoms, there is likely some degree of damage to the heart muscle, possibly severe.

Heartworm treatment works by killing off the adult worms. You can end up with worms dying off suddenly and placing a heavy bacteria load on the heart or even blocking vessels or circulating through the body and clogging the lungs. Precise and careful dosage and monitoring is required to minimize the risks.

Hey there guys,

I sent a private response but unfortunately I am not that helpful through the computer without actually seeing the dog! If the dog tested positive for heart worm, I agree that at home treatment is just not going to work. Some of the issues involve the fact that treatments may take a long time to do anything and then you have a dog walking around with microfilaria in their blood which can be a reservoir for mosquitoes. This means other dogs in the area run the risk of infection. It is also very difficult to kill adult worms (which is why the treatment itself -immiticide - can be so dangerous.) If ivermectin worked on adult worms, then we would definitely use that in place of immiticide!

The recommended treatment for heartworm by the national association right now is a month of antibiotics followed by a few injections of immiticide. This seems to work well, but it is unfortunately rather expensive in most states.

My suggestion would be to explain your situation to your vet so they can keep the overall costs low for you while providing a good treatment plan for your dog. You can also look into shelters that offer low cost care for the public's animals.

I have a dog almost in the same situation. He is a 12yr old lab, weighing right at 60lbs. He has heartworms I'm 99% sure of it. He had them once before when he was about 5yrs old and it cost almost $800 7yrs ago to get rid of em. This time though, he is older, both of his ears have developed terrible yeast infections again, almost a year ago I gave the vet $500 to flush and fix his ears by giving him prevention medications. The family and I went on vacation for a few weeks and when I came back his ears were full blown again. He has been coughing now for close to 2 weeks and it is absolutely killing me to just sit here and listen to his pain. I feel like such a looser, I just cannot afford any more vet visits. I mean if I had enough money to take him in and it was either, take him to the vet or pay the utility bill, I would take him. I just don't have the money right now. But he doesn't understand that. He looks at me like he is saying "what's wrong with me?" And he still has so much dedication and devotion to me during all this. All I can do is try thinking out of the box.
I have some ivermectin pour on, a in-law sent it to us during the massive COVID scare, none of us have used it yet but I got to researching about its use in killing heartworms in dogs and I know it would be a really small dose. I just need to know from some one who has a real life experience or professional opinion if this "pour-on" ivermectin would even work? I just need to help him somehow!! Please ??!
