Need advice on RIR

We are looking at breeds for breeding. The hens will be layers and the roos eaten.  How are RIR for this?  My DH really  likes them.    We have some now and really like them.  Whats the opinions on them as dual purpose not just layers?

My spell check is not working.   I can't spell so please work with me.

Reds, like all members of the American Class were bred a dual purpose birds. There are strains that lay well & other strains that do not. For meat they obviously will not have the growth rate of hybrid meat birds. They will make a better soup or stewing chicken than they will a fryer.

Could i work with them to have them be good with both or would a different breed be a better bet?   I'm trying to stay away from the cornish x's.

I have several dual purpose breeds and the RIR and Buff Orpingtons win hands down. I am trying Dorkings this year too (order comes in next week). The Orpingtons dress out into a beautiful white skin after processing.Excellent flavor and the hens make wonderful mothers/layers. Here is a pic of some 6 month old roos I put in the freezer a couple of weeks ago. You may want to try the Orpingtons too if dual purpose is what you are after.

I agree Orpingtons are the way to go...Ive got splash and blue orps and all they do is lay...and my roos are massive and good flock protecter. Hawk took one hen and ever since then he calls them all back into the coop when a bird is above. They do like to go broody though.lol
