As promised this is Sarah my almost 10 year old Royal Bahamian Potcake.

Any idea why they picked this name for the breed? Do they all look similar?

They come in all colors. Sarah just happens to be one of the lighter ones. And yes they do tend to look similar. It just depends on which particular island they are from. Sarah came from Abaco island and the dogs from there look very much alike. At least from all the pictures I have seen.
As for the name. Potcake is the term used to describe what ended up in the bottom of the kettle of a bean and rice dish that is popular there. This was often fed to the dogs and at some point the dogs just ended up being called Potcakes.

I think she is beautiful!  How is her temperment?

She was a very timid puppy. Could have been from all the travel she did between being trapped with her litter mates at 8 weeks and being shipped up to Maine at some point a couple months later. . She and another Potcake were in the Kennebunk shelter when they were four months old.
She tends to be afraid of most males and standoffish until she gets to know anyone else. She is very gentle with people but just isn't the type that will run up with tail wagging and tongue hanging out to play. She prefers to sit back and observe. At puppy school she hung out at the instructor's table when I was working my collie. I never really worked with her yet we would often use Sarah to demonstrate in the beginners class. She just seemed to absorb what obedience was all about.
At home she is the alpha dog. Doesn't put up with anything from the other dogs. And she is the perfect couch potato. If there is one fault it is her appetite for anything that is avian. I learned the hard way that she will go after my chickens. She is quick and very good at hunting. But she also chased the pesky fox off the other day so she does keep an eye out for predators.
All in all I like the breed. Some are certainly more outgoing but I think the caution just comes from being a feral dog. Caution is a survival technique that works well. So I suppose is the ability to hunt.

I went to the Common Ground Fair today. Small poultry show. I'm not surprised though since most go to Farmington. The kids were happy to see what was there anyway. It was a busy day at the fair given the weather.
