Arizona Chickens

Pics
Hello everyone in Arizona!

This is a great place for information. I read earlier in this thread about freezing water bottles and ice blocks and put into the water containers. That's a good idea and I may try it out. We are also going to set up a mister system.

I posted this in another thread but I just lost one of my girls the other day. One of my friends who also has chickens in my town say that it could of been heat stroke although it wasn't the hottest day it was actually overcast on Friday which is when it happened. Just devastated my husband and I.

We enjoy letting them out to run around when we are there. They are so entertaining. I couldn't imagine not having chickens.

Hi everyone. I don't guess I've posted to this AZ thread before. I'm Rachel. I live in central Phx and currently have 3 1.5-year old hens (RIR, EE and blue andalusian), three khaki campbell ducklings, and 8 chicks on order from mypetchicken. (polish, marans, faverolles, SLW, australorp, EE)
About the water bottle thing-- I find that the water stays cool enough on it's own as long as its always in the shade. I like to freeze a water bottle, take the lid off and lay it down on its side underneath a bush where the chickens like to sit. This way they can sit up against it and cool off and they also like to drink the cold water that drips out (which also keeps the ground a little moist).
Does anyone have any experience with turkens? I heard they do well in the heat and I love the way they look like funny vultures. Are they good layers? I'd like to add a few of those...

Hi Arizona Chicken Lovers!
I think my girls are getting pretty close to laying and I am not sure who is more anxious!!! Me or them! LOL
I can't wait to get that first egg! If I am calculating right they are 12 to 14 weeks old....I bought them from a feed store and they said they were 4 to 6 weeks when I got them end of May....I have been watching for all the signs and their faces and combs look more red.....is there anything else I can watch for? Someone also told me because of ther heat they might take longer to lay?????? I was also told they wouldn't lay until they were 20 weeks but I keep reading that folks are getting eggs much sooner than that!
Overly anxious and excited!!!! Any ideas!!??? Thanks kmhfuzzhead.....new at this:)

Hi everybody!
I'm Katie and I live in Prescott. I have 4 black star hens in my backyard. I'm a college student who happens to love animals and thankfully, my parents own the house where I dwell and are OK with my 'girls.' I let the girls free-range in my backyard (6 foot privacy fence).
My girls are doing OK with the heat- they have two porches to hide under, lots of shade and water. I am wondering about winter though. I'm from Texas and HATE the snow, so I'm wondering if my girls will like it/make it through the winter OK. Does anyone have experince with this that they could share? Here is a photo of my girls outside their coop.

And a photo of me with Thelma (my tamest girl)

Anyhow, nice to 'meet' some fellow AZ chicken lovers!

Just wanted to say hi to my fellow desert dwellers. I have recently adopted 3 hens and hopefully will be getting three more babies to add to the bunch next Friday! Whoo hoo! I'm looking forward to getting to know al of you!

Hi Arizona People!
Well, I hear that chickens like to eat scorpions, so I think I like chickens!

Where can I get 2 baby chicks? I need girls!!! My best friend in college raised chickens, and had the type that lay blue eggs.(Americanas?) I thought that would be fun, but I am really open minded. The silky chickens look so cute too!

I live in East Mesa, so I was hoping to find somewhere -or some one- who could sell me 2 chicks nearby! I also wanted tiny babies because I thought my kids would love to watch them grow.

Thanks!
Jenny

How's the weather up there??? I am in Tucson. I have yet to get my chicks... waiting and waiting... My coop, run and chicken tractor are all complete. Who knew it would take so long to get four chicks?

Rebetzin,
We were at OK feed a couple of weeks ago and my DS was trying to talk me into letting him get a couple of cochin chicks. They were soooo cute. I held strong and we walked out of there with only chicken feed.

I still have to get rid of a couple of 4 month roosters before we get any more chickens.

Hope you are able to get your chicks soon!!

Fairly new to BYC and we live in Glendale (a couple miles north of The Stock Shop). We have 2 teenage daughters and 11 pullets about 9-10 weeks old.

We did not enclose our coop because of the heat - just made a shelter to protect them from the rain & wind and used a dog run to keep out predators.
