it's official. me and laree taking a simple trip to pick up a few chicks = A BAD IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we only took 3 of the 5 kids between the two of us(i had a sick one and twin B just couldn't be bothered) but they ran all over that place and got into trouble, climbing into horse stalls and who knows what else as we scoped out the merchandise. i brought home 4 basque chickies and 2 white ameraucana chickies and laree got some hatching eggs from the biggest fluffy butts i have ever seen in my life. they sure were pretty. maybe she'll toss a girl over my fence ![]()
Listen, next time you go with Laree, TAKE SOME CASH... cuz when she sees something that she knows I'm gonna want, you just need to buy it and I'll pay you later. GOOD GRIEF! 167th Ave and Durango! 1 hour 15 minutes, round trip...
and they are gorgeous.
Oh, and yeah, their orps and Ameraucanas are HUGE!... and I trounced all over the backyard too....
AND... I brought home a white Am too... HOPE IT'S a PULLET

I know this is kinda late, but I have been meaning to post some pics of our new ladies from the show last Saturday!
They're still in the "getting introduced phase" so have been kept together in a separate coop/small run from all of the others, other than a couple of times we've put them elsewhere in the yard in this little pen for a bit so they could catch some new scenery and the groups could check each other out....
Cujo the Stealth roo checking out the new hotties
He thinks his name should be Mr. Fantastic...
We are quite enamored of the two white Modern Games....they are so inquisitive and interesting looking!
Also seen are two Crele Old English Games .
High-Rise Chickens!
The very wild Serama hen we have been calling "Psycho" (although here she is deceptively calm looking) and the Crele OEGBs. We hope to introduce Psycho in with Cujo the roo
and his 3 other Serama ladies (Houdini, Webster and Squirrely)
How are you liking the Modern Games? Are they integrated with the other birds yet? I'm super curious about those guys. I just love their stature and the look in their eye
, but I worry they'd be more than I could contain in my urban yard if I allowed them to free range. They look like they might treat a 5' block wall like it was a minor obstacle. Have you let them loose in the yard yet?
Gallo,
we've turned them loose and they're behaving themselves! They seem to enjoy exploring the yard and so far I haven't seen them do anything the OEGBs can't do (but basically choose not to do). They all have access all around the yard now but the 5 new ones haven't strayed too far from their coop. The 5 (2 moderns, 2 creles and the serama) are still sticking together for the most part, but the 2 moderns will sneak in with the others to snag food and such so they're not shy! And they're already laying....pretty big eggs for such little bodies, but they do look like they've got a wider stance/hips than the OEGBs....
They definitely know where the treats come from and are very curious and chatty with that little meep-meep-meep chattery kinda noise they make (noises like my OEGBs, but maybe a little more variety of the chattery noises)? Sounds more like a conversation or commentary on whatever we're doing! So far in behavior they really remind me of the OEGBs, but with that crazy stature....like herons or water birds, and sometimes when they're paused from whatever they're getting into they will lift up a leg and stand like a stork
I really am enjoying them. They're very interested in people but aren't wild about being picked up, although once they're in your hand they're not too worried about it....
I see myself wanting more Moderns...they're little, right??
Edited to add: we are in a suburban block wall type environment too in N. Phoenix...have 2 coops but they are open during the day so everyone free ranges. The only issues we've had with flightiness (so far anyway) were with Japanese bantams.
Gallo, I had to update my response!
......after ZERO interest in the outside world.....EVER, today of all days the 4 OEGBs that we've had since chickdom in November decided that it was a good day to go exploring. DH was working in the front yard (chickens are in the back yard behind block wall) and he looks up from what he's working on and sees the "peep gang" as we call it stroll on up to him, the 4 of them chattering excitedly the whole time. He had to chase them all around, and rather than running around the side yard to put them back, he just shoved them in the front door of the house as he caught them (oh yay).
The last one (Red Sonja) is really hard to catch. Luckily all of this is captured on our security cameras! He had the video cued up and ready for me when I walked in the door, so I could see what mayhem "my" chickens caused this afternoon.....
So now it looks like tomorrow morning I'm going to be trimming some flight feathers.....naughty girls. I'm just glad someone was home. We have a busy street in front of our house, and neighbors with crazy backyard dogs....etc......very lucky.
