We have 5 Black Australorps. I wan't to stagger my hens for egg production so in about 6 months I want to get two or three EE then every year add a couple more. I've read egg prodution is pretty much done during the third year. Anyone know for sure? Where can I send my non layers for retirement?

CHICKEN MATH at it finest!

Non layers go to freezer camp.

Unless they are pets, then they get to freeload. big_smile.png

My run / coop is 4 x 17 - I thought I'd only have 6 or 7 as well.  lau.gif

I have 7 layers (one who is eating eggs and has a limited residence with me when I figure out who she is) 14 chicks (3 males for supper) and plans on ordering "just a few more".

I haven't been on in a while, and I'm something like a hundred pages behind, so I'm sorry if I've missed something important.

Welcome new people.  I'm sorry for the losses and sickness for those going through it.

I just wanted to share...I was out doing some yard work in the front today, and I heard a very loud, very long egg song............FROM ACROSS THE STREET!!  ya.gif Woohoo!  Hooray for more chicken people in my neighborhood!  Until now I was the only weirdo chicken person in the neighborhood (no offense, all you other weirdo chicken people).

Novaleigh

sorry about your chick and ducklings. it is hard to lose them. around here, if i lose a favorite bird, i just stop getting that breed altogether and i have completely stopped naming them. i am stubborn that way. my kids have come to realize the circle of life and i have a broody silkie who was acting strange so one of my twins said very matter of factly "let's just put her down." th.gif

um, no.

i understand your friend being upset, it sounds like the silkies were not the healthiest maybe? i do have some silkie chicks that are now 6 weeks and are running around crazy. hens may be harder to find unless someone has some to part with. send me a pm if you think your friend would be interrested.

Sorry your chickens have bugs.....but your post did make me giggle.  That OMG HORROR feeling only happens the first couple of times you find lice....you get over it.  gig.gif

Novaleigh  I am so sorry.  You might want to get some vitamins in them (in addition to the abx)  Poly-vi-sol for infants is a great one and I have used save-a-chick from the feed store also.

Gallo- bummer, I didn't realize pistachios needed so many chill hours.  800 is really pushing it, don;t think we get that much,  I loved the chick story and the picture is adorable.

Billiam, I have an old Cuckoo Marans (4 and a half I think).  She still lays an egg or 2 a week.  It is a huge dark speckled brown egg.  Love her eggs, she is a sweetie and the thought of eating her makes me cringe.....so she will probably be a free-loading pet that lives to be 20!!

Babies from the marathon hatch.  Took 3 days for 8 little chicks to pop out of their shells....no clue why??

Thanks!

I've got some if you don't mind them being mixed breed.

Put another 4-1/2 hours into the brooder/tractor/grow-out pen/engineering disaster today.

I got the cross braces in the sides and the litter retention panels in the coop and brooder section.

A few more latches & catches & handles & it'll be ready for the dip!

Why can't I do anything simply? idunno.gif

Oh my GOD! I may have fried my eggs! I candled them and have 5 duds with 4 maybes, so far but when I put them in lock down I noticed a few hour later that the temp was down for I did take out one of the plugs like you are suppoised to do. Well I turn up the stat and I thought just a bit but then I forgot to check them. When I finally remembered to the temp was 106! Been that way I think for at least 2 hours! I am just sick!hit.gif
