With several comments about finding it hard to obtain good quality Brabanters, has anyone purchased from Sandhill? Where have you found good quality stock? If our town changes it's regs, this is...
-
I like everything about it except how it looks right now. I know it lays decently. It is a great part of my great waterfowl flock.
-
First, watching a runner duck run is awesome. They can find their own food. They aren't like pekins in water. Mine haven't started laying but I heard their decent.
-
Its not as fat and slow as a pekin, but its not frail either. I want a mallard but I don't want a flying bird. The rouen is great for that.
-
They are my calmest birds and are easiest to catch. They eat less than Pekins. I heard they also lay well, but mine are younger.

I get it now.
I've got a friend at school that sings that line every time he sees me.
From your lips (fingertips?) to God's ear I should make his money!

Wow, so much excitement around here!
Fuzzybird, your new baby is so dang cute!
pdx2phx, did anything hatch from the remaining two eggs? No Dos-ie or Tres-eanna?
Arizonachicken-- the wait is so long and exciting! I hope she has a good hatch.
There are few things cuter than a broody caring for her chicks.
Billiam, Awesome run!
Puffycheeks, it looks like you have a full-on farm there! Or is it a zoo?
pimachickens, Good luck with George!
Mikey D, Congratulations on your impending induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
Gallo,
Uno is doing well....eating, drinking and pooping!
She did get a little chick 'rodeo' yesterday though that was a little scary. She saw Momma's tasty looking little wattles and grabbed on tight....Momma was not pleased and whipped her head around a few times to shake Uno off before we could get to her. I had to actually grab the chick to get her to let go of mom's wattle....talk about grip strength!!
Everyone is fine, but I see Uno eyeing the wattles from time to time still.....they kinda look like tasty little bacon bits, so I can understand why she wants some!
I haven't peeked under the other broody yet this morning. I checked yesterday afternoon and I heard peeping from one of the eggs, but then I got paranoid that I was bothering her and so backed off. I'm also really worried that I might have not put the egg back in the same exact position! I'm pretty sure I did, but not 100% sure.....and so now I'm worried that I might have messed up.....I didn't know! I was so shocked to hear the egg peeping....
I want to see if there's been any pipping. Argh! I am stressed about that little egg! I suspect the other one won't hatch because it has had a hairline crack in it for quite a while, although it was still developing a week ago....so who knows. I hope we have a Dos-ie at least and that I didn't mess up that other little chick's chances.......
X2X - too bad there's no video!
Mikey,
DH and I have started calling Momma hen's wattles "mommy bacon".....as in:
"...Uno was jumping up as high as her little legs would take her, trying to get some more of that tasty mommy bacon!"
I know.....I know....we are weird
That is very funny,
and
a little disturbing.

I had a couple of gross things happen today. So of course, here are pictures.
First, I found this on the patio. Please tell me something layed its eggs on this poop. I scoured the yard, found more poo, but none with worms. HELP!!
Next, my broody finally got off her nest, and I found this:
So I'm down to 5 eggs and I don't know how many more are like this. The others are intact. It's been a bad day.
My family consists of 1 DH, who is more tolerant than anyone should be; 5 children, ages 7 and under and one due any day now; 3 totally annoying dogs, and 12 chickens!

Sorry about the egg :(.
The buggers on the poop came from one of your girls. They are tapeworm segment (eggs). Some of my girls had them last year. You need to use Valbazen to get rid of them. Treat once and then repeat 10 days later. Check out Dawg53's threads about worming and Valbazen.

I think Sherrie said earlier to use hot water. I wouldn't put a towel over them as they need the circulation when hatching. In emergencies I have gotten a wash cloth wet with hot water and wrung out so not dripping, but still soppy. Wishing you luck as you didn't have the 106 for a horribly long time :)
Edited to say I toss it in the corner!
I took out my water and got really hot water going and replaced the water with the hot and I also took one big spunge and did what you said with the rag. I got the humidty up to 55%.
I have ONE chick hatched. One my own silkies. Hope more start to hatch now! Thanks.

Memphis is going to order some from Cackle - born on date is June 1st.
She is going to be back in Mesa on June 16th for delivery.
PM her and see if there is any room in the order for some more.
I am going to try to breed them & have at least 2 pullets with weird or missing toenails that I'm going to sell as pet quality.

Progress:
- both upper & lower ramp supports/mounts for both ramps
- flanges for wire on the three openings that do not have doors
- handle for main run door
- block off panel for brooder floor (keeps peepers in)
- rack for block of panel (so's I don't lose it!)
- brace stiffeners and legs
- lower latch for isolation door (separates adolescents from peepers)
- remote control for upper latch for isolation door (so I don't have to crawl on my belly to close it)
Still need:
- axle, wheels, braces/supports for such
- drill out all of the latch pins
- deburr the fence panels
I am hopefully going to take it to AZ Galvanizing Monday after school.
