Quote: Unfortunely  I too have had terrible things happen.  One of my broodies just pecked both of her new chicks eye out and pecked a hole in the back of the others head.  I lost the eye one but the head one id doing fine now that i brought thme inside.  I do not know what to do about it ???  Mine does it as soon as the chix start to hatch.  Does anyone know why this happens or what to do ?  Well besides incubation?  Should I get rid of this hen?  Although 2 of my others have started to do this too.  barnie.gif

It's back is bloody and also it's butt. The second chick has one wing and underneath it are bleeding, but that is it. The other four are ok and this Icelandic mom has always seemed a bit rough with her chicks. I pulled the mom and put her back in the main coop. I brought the hurt chicks inside. I am not sure what happened. Has anyone had this happen before?

I am sooo looking forward to the fair and seeing all the animals. Hoping I can make some connections for chicks. Trying to hatch shipped eggs is killing me.

Yes, there is poultry at the Pima County Fair.  I haven't shown there before, so I cannot tell you how many will be there, or what kind.  I'll look up the dates tomorrow--I have the flyer.

As for the variety of Dutch, probably silver duckwing from what you describe.

They are mixed. Hens are EE, RIR, Blue Marans, SS, Black Orpington, and a CC Marans. Rooster for most of these is a CC Marans. The B orpington probably has an English splash roo over it but I'm not sure.

All right, all right, I give in.  When can I come pick some up? wink.png  PM me with address and $$.  I've had FBCM, do the other Marans lay dark eggs, too?  Do you think you might have an olive egger in there, too?

My family consists of 1 DH, who is more tolerant than anyone should be; 5 children, ages 7 and under and one due any day now; 3 totally annoying dogs, and 12 chickens!

mikey and memphis,

i am not, repeat, NOT going to eat my muscovies if they turn out to be drakes. i do think 2 of the 4 are drakes, so one of the drakes will be living at mikey's house gig.gifso far they are so sweet and i filled the giant hole the dogs dug with water yeaterday and they went to town just swimming and eating mud. then they followed the baby silkies around the yard, got pecked by the big hens and took a really long nap later in their giant duck brooder in the garage. nope, i don't eat duck.
