PUFFYCHEEKS: My mama hen is a blue laced red wyandotte. I agree, I love her colors. I have another, but she is much darker. Apparently, there's a lot of variation in the breed. I'll try to post a pic of her tomorrow. big_smile.png

My family consists of 1 DH, who is more tolerant than anyone should be; 5 children, ages 7 and under and one due any day now; 3 totally annoying dogs, and 12 chickens!

The little girls have moved to the big girl coop. ( Mama Hen Gretchen is now brooding in their "nursery" pen) They like to sit on the outdoor roost in the early morning and have a little nap.

Great opportunity to snap some pics.

Started a gutter garden with Chicken Salad Mix. Have to get some wheat grass seed. Also will add

some plants (probably silk) to this nest box. A peer from work asked if I wanted it. Of course I grabbed it up.

Reminiscent of hydroponics...

Does anyone have a spare bedroom the chicks and I could use for a few months?

I picked up the brooder/tractor today.

  • They kinked a brace - quite visible

  • Almost every one of the 98 individual hinge barrels is now full of zinc - I'm going to have to torch each one and melt it out.

  • They lost a part - the remote latch release for the brooder door.
  • And my 200lb / $150 galvanizing process turned into 607 lbs and $355!!! th.gif

Luckily I have the best wife on the planet and she just laughed it off and said, "Well, I guess we are back up to $49.99 per egg again."

I will not have a chance to work on it until Sunday & I have to get her fence up first.  I'll post pictures as I go.

Cause I wanted to take my coop home - no pay - go away.

Don't worry, they are getting a letter tomorrow - I won't do any good but I'm writing it anyway.

I estimated the weight (way way off!) and they charge by the pound - so the cost is my fault.

The other stuff they are going to hear about.

I was thinking they might be good for a soup? Like chicken and dumplings? Or does anybody else have any idea what they could go into? Have to cull this weekend, and it just seems wastefull to just throw them out.

I processed a leghorn pullet awhile back, she was eating eggs and had to go.  I boiled up the carcass and used the meat in chili.  Very tasty.

With all the damage, they should have cut you a HUGE break.  Maybe not free, but something like at cost.
