Appenzeller Spithauben - looks like a Dalmatian with a Mohawk

IMG_4240.JPG

The one on the top left got scalped by a hen a few weeks earlier.

They are my favorites but pretty delicate.  All of the birds in the US were derived from a single flock that was imported in the 50's (I think) so inbreeding had reduced their vigor.

I'm pondering contacting the chamber of commerce in Appenzeller Sweden and looking into getting a couple of dozen fertile eggs shipped.

One "Anti-chicken-poop fence"

IMG_4257[1].JPG

I made it a bit long and added an extra panel just in case we'd like to move it or use it elsewhere.

IMG_4258[1].JPG

The gate is not hinged yet - just propped up.

That's why it looks a bit katty-whompus.

I have to take the bulldozer and remove the hump so it sets flat.

I'm thinking the chickens are not going to like the bulldozer very much.  barnie.gif  ep.gifth.gif  lau.gif

Hi Kat, I think maybe you should bring that black chick back. Folks are calling it cockerel and so is the silver one. Come to think of it you will not want any of Cottons hatch black ones for they are the ones with missing toes.hmm.png I want to get him back soon for I don't want the other chickens to forget who he is and not except him back.

Unfortunately the chick was dead this morning. The poor rooster Hawkeye is worse and still acts partially blind. I think we will loose him.sad.png

I set some eggs yesterday I got from Bootsie. Trying again to hatch some ameraucanas. Thanks Bootsie! I pretty much know what went wrong with my Easter hatch. Hope I have a good hatch this time for planning on keeping one rooster and all the hens.

I really think this black silky is a hen. She is 8 weeks old. What does everyone think? Also she is a purebred silky right? Has all the toes she needs. The others are silkies also and they are from the same hatch.HEY my rooster Tumbleweed has 6 toes on one of his feet!

Tumbleweed is obviously an over achiever!

WAY too young to tell gender, likewise quality.  If it has silkied feathers (and all your appear to), then it should be considered pure silkie.

thats to many toes. they should have 5 total no more no less . If I get one that doesnt have the right amount I dont use them in my breeding program because that will carry on to the next generations.

Actually, silkies should have 10 toes, lol.

Seriously, though, six toed birds are fine for breeding, and 4-toed ones can be okay, too.  Incubation temperature during the first few days can cause incorrect number of toes, even when the bird is pure for polydactyly.  With a 6 toed bird you KNOW the gene is present.
