This is two of my Polish/silky I hatched from Aurorarose's eggs. They are almost 12 weeks old. Any guesses on gender? I am thinking that Fancy the more colorful one is roo and Muppet the one with the most topknot is hen. Hope I am right! Neat colors aren't they? The first one shows also my turklet Goldy.

Oh how sad.  Your story about Waldo preening her, brought on some tears.

I am so confused.  The second from the bottom of the pecking order of my 20 week olds did an eggs song.  First egg song from my pullets.  I was so eggcited I went searching the yard, nest boxes and NOTHING...NOTHING I tell ya.  GRRR....would they start to lay already???  My 5 girls are now 20 weeks, the Australorp is 18 weeks and my Ideal 236 (white leghorns) are 17 weeks.  They should all be starting.  I've read that it's typical for the Ideal 236s to start laying between 13-16 weeks.  That's early but mine are 17 weeks and don't seem interested at all.  Actually none of them seem to snoop in the coop during the day time.  They only go in to roost.

Anything I can feed them or do to encourage them to lay?  I think I've been patent long enough old.gif

Great question!!!  I sometimes wonder that too!  I could think of several breeds I would love to try out!!!

I didn't realize it's an issue when you have two healthy flocks. It just crossed my mind because so many people can't have or don't want roosters. I have chickens on the brain right now. Should be getting mine this weekend. Can't wait!

WATCH OUT FOR "chicken math"  LOL

Any way can I tell what the breed is by the color? I have 4 that are light with dark marks and 3 dark chicks. I am so happy to get chicks this time!wee.gif

No sorry, I didn't see your posts....been AFK and am hopelesly behind here.  I think the warm weather has something to do with the early hatches. Lockdown was a day late on my last hatch and I had a chick already out of the shell.

The dark chicks are blue or black lav splits.  If you breed them together you should get some lav ams.  The light are either wheaten or Easter eggers.  I have an errand to run, but will try and post some pics of what to expect.

Congratulations!!!
