MAMA HEN CHRIS: That is a great picture! I think Lacey may have been egg bound. That on top of the heat. All my other chooks, including my other BLRW are doing great. Even that day no one looked stressed. She died really fast and had tried to lay the day before but I didnt think much of it because egg production has gone down with this terrible heat. Such a shame, I keep thinking that if I had figured it out earlier, I may have been able to help her.

My family consists of 1 DH, who is more tolerant than anyone should be; 5 children, ages 7 and under and one due any day now; 3 totally annoying dogs, and 12 chickens!

so i think i have a rooster with a broken wing.? you know how a chicken looks with wings dropped because its hot? well his wont go back into place, he seems to have no control over it either. i cant feel anything different, but i dont know what to feel for. its possible that he and his brother were flapping around in the run and he banged into a roost pole or the fence or something. we bandaged it but he keeps trying to wiggle out.

anyone with experience here?

also - any az peeps with a pond? all my water lettuce has died and i dont know what is going on. my fish are fine and i'm buying a new filter today. is it the sun?

I didn't try the vinegar trick - so far things aren't too bad with the pullets and hens.  The older girls peck every once in a while to keep the little girls away, but no blood or hen fights yet!

Anyone have advice for exterminators that are chicken friendly?  We need to keep the house protected from scorpions and spiders but not hurt the chickens or poision their bug snacks.  There is about 20 feet between the house and where the chicken run starts and will increase to 50-60 feet once we get the new coop built.

Water lettuce does that this time of year.  At least it did at my place the first couple of years I had my pond.  It also doesn't like bunching up at one end of the pond, which mine did every time we had a monsoon wind.  I gave up on it and went with water lilies instead.  Pond is now green and happy.

Poor Lacey. Tough to tell with all her fluff what's going on. I think we all think what if. She was a beauty for sure. I forgot to say Happy 1st Birthday to Dominic!!!! I forget which day it was.
