my husband had pekins growing up, he doesnt remember anything about when or if anyone bothered to sex them. we have ancona ducks, our first ducks. weve been doing the chicken thing for some time, but now we are trying our hands at ducks. we sold a slew of khaki campbells that we got in a hatchery surprise, all those ducks...........poop city! poop soup! poop! uuuugggghhhh.
they actually defy the laws of physics by pooping more than they actually consume. and messy to boot.
ok anyways..............we kept the anconas, 3 weeks old now, how can we tell if they are boys or girls, and when? i dont really NEED to know, but id like to. and they are cute little boogers. can someone enlighten me?

I was able to tell on mine after they feathered out but before the drake feathers came in by their "voices" I got lucky I bought 4 and had 2 boys and 2 girls

but Anconas are my favorite, so I had to pester a bit! They're adorable!

I think unless you vent check them the voices will be the only clue until drake feathers come in. I don't guess the chocolate drake/black hen sex linked babies thing applies cos you prolly don't know the parents? Yella-With-Freckles has such a perky little tailnub!

I have four Anconas of different colors. Two that I think will be black and white (now black and yellow), a tan and white and a lilac and white. Two of them are wider and have more prominent breasts, even wider beaks. The other two are more svelte with thinner bills and bodies and less prominent breasts. The wider, larger ones even seem to have more self confidence, jumping into the little pool when the others seem to nervous to do it. This was their first day swimming, yesterday, they are ten days old. They all squak a lot. I can't tell if their voices are different. Sometimes they are very loud when they are left alone, etc. They do not like to be separated and will not eat if they are sitting alone in the little brooder until the others are present. So when I move them, I do it quickly or I am serenaded by incessant squawking. They are cute, but they aren't particularly friendly and still seem afraid of me even through I feed them 4 times a day-I don't just leave it there in a feeder all the time. The breeder told me that they would consider humans more useful if I did this.

The heavily marked ones are tricolors.
Do you have pictures of the other two?

You won't be able to sex them by voice until they are 8-10 weeks old

I took a photo of them through the screen of their enclosure, they stay still that way. anyway, I hope you can see the lilac (lighter) one in the foreground and the black and white one that is closer to the camera. The one to the right of him is supposed to be tan when he grows up according to the breeder and the one in the very back is the one you saw earlier that should be tricolor when he's/she? older.
