Australorps breed Thread - Page 113

Hi Folks,

Is there an elephant in the room? I don't have any knowledge of American poultry politics, I just love the bird and like to talk with like-minded souls. S

orry these are hard to read, but if you click on them you might get some interesting info. The first is fom "The Victorian Poultry Journal-News Bulletin of the Victorian Poultry Fanciers Association- Vol. 1 Issue 1 1982. "Judging the Australorp to the Standard" - R.J.Wright.

There were rosecomb Australorps bred from these birds which arrived in Tasmania in 1901. They were shown in Tassie for some years but they seem to have disappeared.

Apparently they didn't lay as well as singlecombs, but were superior meat chooks. See Manna's interesting post on Backyardpoultry-Breeds and Breeding-Utility Breeds..........

Some points re Aussies. Not all here would agree with this. Finally managed to spin these to save your poor necks!

This is pretty basic and not all would agree. It suits small-scale beginning breeders and it's generally the approach I'm adopting.

This would have been the type of 'Cook Orp.' that was used to create the Aussie. I think that it's important to note for those attempting to recreate the Aussie using Orp. blood, that to use the fluffy Partington-type exhibition form of Orp. might be doing the Aussie breed a disservice, as this strain was/is a poor layer.
