All modern chicken breeds are the results of a cross. a long time ago befor commercial farming ...Farmers would have a direct work plan to improve egg laying , or meat production, or good all purpose bird ... in orpington chickens ,a farmyard favorite but eggs were small for size of chicken and they wanted to increase egg production so they knew what to cross to get that. Australorps set one world record after another with no artificial lighting, the worlds record being 364 eggs in 365 days...the crosses worked.. the old timers being much closer to the farm and animals than we are today understood if you cross this breed with orpingtons you will increase egg production..RIRs bred for winter hardy all around good farm bird.. buckeye with smaller comb cold hardy birds all are crosses .ect...ect... they usually had a plan or need befor they started a project. Once a project bird started breeding true they could call it a breed and ask it be inducted into SOP.

Im planning on adding some black buff orpington back into my flock..I have a knockout rooster at our other barn (australorp) he has a lot of good features , great eye, as perfect a comb as can possibly be with 5 points, he produces hens that are monser egg layers one of his hens laid 340 eggs last year, but I think If I cross him back into some blk buff orps it will help improve the little bit of leghorn look that he has. tail too big..He is so good at producing egg laying hens in my husbands project that hes worth his weight in gold..I think one cross with black buff orps and there will be some show birds out of that cross that wont dissapoint in the egg dept..
Leghorn was one of the early base breeds of australorps, black leghorn I beleive. they added just a pinch of it and you see that type crop up here and there. Im sorry I dont have a picture of this rooster right at the moment, I will take a camera down there this week..he has the gentle nose to tail curves of the australorp and just a little of that leghorn look, he must have thrown back to that.

Aveca,
Thanks, I've been searching for 'thechickenut', and not had any luck. Maybe cause I don't know how to work the search under the user list! Tried the google search also, to no avail. Is this the correct spelling? thechickenut . And is the e-mail address correct? Seems like I need a server name in there? I appreciate the tip, would like to get in touch with her., or your husband!! Maybe I could talk him out of a dozen of those 340 !!

Who all on here are working on a Blue Australorp project? Huppfarms is, I know, and I am going to start later this year. Huppfarms told me that there needs to be at least 5 different strains of Blues in order to get them into the SOP. He is full of great info and very willing to share!!!

Immsorry its:

tnchickenut

she has so much going on with other web sites that she might not be in here anymore, i didnt see her name on member list on front page anymore..you can contact her through :

http://www.delawarecpoultryclub.com

If I didnt spell that right, its pretty easy to look up on google.

she also has a personal web site that in my senior moment might not get it right there should be a link at delaware polutry club web site its http://www.exceptionalchickens.com I beleive thqat is correct..tell her lynnie sent you.she got those birds to send me some eggstrying to help me out so Im excited about it...mid life brain fade hee hee cant remeber..you can ask her for the web site of the woman she got them from , they did some winning and show off thier awards at thier web site and they also raise prize winning bull dogs if I remember right..sorry about the senior moment. I will be getting some of thesde eggs as well. Im still laying down the foundation and Im all in favor of starting with a broad genetic foundation, then shutting it down and working inside it..keeps things healthy I think.fewer hatch probelems ect...

And chet and marta at hupp farms are wonderful people who have some outstanding birds and have been working hard for many years..its a real passion for him to produce the blues..if you have any questions he can help, he does a lot of homework..I have all I can do at this point to improve my blacks and winters here are brutal so right at the moment dont want a second choice breed or color..Im outside cracking frozen water every couple minutes. I have the heated waters but somone out there needs to come up with better designs, the tin heaters heat up too much and water gets hot and tinney tasting , the plastic ones are superior but they need to add a way to fill from the top, and a better cord arrangement. its too hard to plug in when filled you have to get right down on the ground and look for the plug..

Aveca,
The bulldog floks are on this site, and have birds for sale, in the '8 weeks and older' listing. They are in North Carolina.

https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=436249

They advertize them as being from the Bruce Sherman line out of California. I'm thinking that I might get up that way this spring while on vacation. Maybe get a nice roo to go with some local hens?? Somehow, someway, I will get a start!! Maybe I can find something at the county fair next week. Thanks for the help.........stan
