Can a Dog Catch Diseases From a Backyard Flock?

I have two aunts, Aunt D and Aunt T. Aunt D is renting Aunt T's house and wants to have chickens. Aunt T is a vet tech who has dogs. She will not allow Aunt D to have chickens on the property because she says that her dogs will catch a disease from Aunt D's chickens.

I've had chickens and dogs in the past. I'm even aware that some people have LGDs for their chickens.

She is a vet tech, though. What's she talking about?

This should be interesting. I hope someone that knows of any diseases that can be passed from a chicken to dogs will respond, as I am very curious, too. I know dogs can get some of the same worms that chickens can pick up, but never heard of any diseases. I would ask your "Aunt T" what in the world she is talking about and enlighten the rest of us

If the chickens are kept in a covered run that the dogs don't have access to, problem solved, either way.
 
I wouldnt think so, but im no expert either. Does she think the dog can catch a disease from being around the chickens? If thats the case wouldnt we and every other animal have to worry. Animals have been around other animals for years, only concern ive ever heard was rabies. Cats eat mice birds and whatever else, and they are fine.

But anyway yes ill be watching this thread and waiting for an expert to chime in!!! I hope its not true my dog is my child and wouldnt want to have to worry about this!!!!
 
I would ask Aunt T, but she doesn't know that Aunt D told me what she said. I don't want to come across like we're talking about her behind her back.

And apparently keeping them separated is not enough. They would have to be separated anyway, because her dogs would undoubtedly eat the birds. Maybe she's concerned with something airborne or in the droppings?
 
Dogs can catch some things from chickens. Just like people can catch some things from chickens. There are alot of zoonotic diseases that do both ways.
Probably the most common thing a dog could catch from a chicken is internal parasites (from eating chicken poop, or walking thru chicken poop and licking their paws)

As long as you keep your flock clean and sanitary you shouldn't have any issues.

Sounds more like she just doesn't want chickens and is using that as an excuse.

Yes dogs can catch diseases from chickens. My friend's shi tzu was quite sick, lost weight and bloody diarrhea. The vet said it was a virus in chicken droppings. My dog on the other hand is finebut he is much larger. The vet said some dogs are more susceptible than others.
 
That's what I'm thinking as well. I think she's being a bit of an elitist, honestly. I'm willing to bet that she just doesn't like birds and is seeing a very small risk as a bigger issue than it actually is. Her dogs travel all over the country for dog shows, so I should think that they'd have a bigger risk of catching diseases from that.

Of course Aunt D won't push the issue because it is Aunt T's house that she's renting and she doesn't want to cause a problem. I just feel sad for Aunt D, because she was really looking forward to getting chickens and I think Aunt T's concern may be unfounded.

I would like to know WHAT virus the dog supposedly picked up from the chicken droppings and on what the vet based his conclusion. Other than the fact that ti sounds good. Did the vet culture the virus to determine its identity? If not, he/she cannot say for certain where the dog picked up the infection. Just because a so-called expert tells you something, it doesn't make it so. People in all walks of life confuse correlation with causation. Just because two events occur close together, it does not mean one causes the other. The dog's foray into the chicken pen may or may not have had any relation to its illness. I'm betting it didn't.
