the biggest raccoon I have ever seen **caution graphic pics**

We found one that had rabies and had to call the sheriff. It was scary.

Cute little guy. We took out a good number when they first became a problem (opening doors to get into coops and such) and since have done proactive removal...haven't had a problem with coons in years. Haven't trapped one for about two years either and still haven't seen one around. Guess the only thing good about the HOA that moved in on what used to be vacant land is they are strict about locking lids on garbage cans... and I don't live in it. LOL

They definitely get much bigger, but bigger ones may not be common in your area (especially given you're "southern") so you may not have to ever deal with bigger ones.

I never realized what a novelty raccoons are to most people until joining BYC. I'm thinking this year I'll have to take a picture of some of the bigger ones we end up with. Every year our dogs always seem to find at least one 40+ pounder to get in a fight with at 3 am.

ohh coons are nasty creatures cross my fingers and toes I haven't seen them on our place but that doesn't mean their not out there. if you have dogs I might put them away at night over raccoons. My moms dog as a kid some kinda hunting pointer got in a battle with a coon one night and lets just say the dog did not win and coons eat anything! let alone if your dog gets bit most raccoons have tons of disease not just rabies. They get much larger than that. one darted in front of my suv when I was a teenager and that stupid thing did damage to my car nice dent in my bumper

More... always. Vigilance will be your only protection.

We had a fort in our tree when I was younger... well it was a few years between the last time we played in it and my wedding day. Needless to say my lil bro thought it would be fun to take all the kids up to see it. About three families of raccoons came out and scared all the guests at my wedding. There is always more!!! Even after my mom called to have the fort removed and the animals removed they still are there. I was home last month and bet my Mom that she still had raccoons and she told me I was silly. So she put some left overs on the deck, and watched. YEP. Still there, after almost 8 years and who knows how much money she spent to protect her precious upscale neighborhood. Sorry mom, the raccoons and rats have no idea there are guards and gates.

Good luck with that. I have them too and I have nightmares where some of the stories I've read here are played out. I lock my birds in every day, so far the fort is holding.

Our raccoons are normal size around here with the exception of sweet corn season, then they seem to become monsters!

We keep our chickens pretty secure and have four dogs running the property. I am not for sure if the dogs are guarding the chickens or just saving them for themselves...........

If raccoons or any other vermit become a problem I will probably electrically charge the fence.

Males have a bone in their "johnson", just like bears do.

That's an average raccoon. We'll take them with .22 cal pellet rifles after running them into trees.

I agree...average coon around these parts. My 7 mo. pup killed one bigger than that the first time he ever encountered a coon....one bite, dead coon, back porch trophy the next morning.

Coon is pretty greasy meat and the flavor isn't my favorite....

Maybe if prepared in a different method, it could be quite savory, not sure.

Years ago DH and I came home one night to find big orange eyes glaring at us in the driveway next to the garage. We turned on the lights and went down there to check it all out. Had never seen one before so was rather excited. Well, the one on the ground disappeared but in the garbage can that had collected rain water 3/4 full there were 4 who had drowned. I guess if we had been 5 mns later we may have found 5. If I have trouble with them when we move to the country I think I will put the cans out around the coop and keep them flled with water.
